➢ I speak only two languages; Sinhala and English.

Importance of English for Communication
Discuss in groups.

1. Why is English important for communication in today’s world? Give


as many reasons as possible.

2. In what different ways do we communicate?

3. What mode of communication do you use English for the most?

4. What are the most important aspects of communicating in English?

Grass Skirts + Scavenger Hunt
● One runner per group.
● Find the adjectives hidden around the room.
● Do not remove the adjective from its place.
● Come back and say the adjective to your group.
● Match the adjective to the correct blank in your text. Get it checked
by me. Spelling should also be correct.
● If the answer is correct, you can find the next adjective.
● Fill in all the blanks to win.

Components of Language: The Eight Competencies
The general education system of Sri Lanka aims to develop the following
eight key competencies through the revised secondary English language

1. Identify the sounds of the English language 5. Extract necessary information from various
types of text
2. Use mechanics of writing with
understanding 6. Use English grammar for the purpose of
accurate and effective communication
3. Engage in active listening and respond
appropriately 7. Use English creatively and innovatively in
written communication
4. Build up vocabulary using words
appropriately and accurately to convey 8. Communicate clearly, fluently and concisely
precise meaning
Give yourself a score from 1 - 10 for each of the competencies
below;
10 meaning “I’m completely confident” and 1 meaning “I’m only
now starting to develop this competency”.

Course Details
Course Aim: This course aims to equip the student teachers with language
related skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing, along with grammar
and vocabulary to engage in effective communication.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, you will be able to,

ILO1: Explain the components of language

ILO2: Value the importance of English as a means of communication

ILO3: Engage in communication activities to improve fluency and accuracy

ILO4: Adopt strategies to engage in self-learning to develop language skills.
