L 23 - DC Machines Construction and Types-2

DC machines can operate as motors or generators depending on the direction of power flow. As a motor, electrical power is input and mechanical power is output. As a generator, mechanical power is input and electrical power is output. DC machines contain a field winding that generates a magnetic field and an armature winding. In a motor, interaction between the magnetic field and current in the armature winding causes the armature to rotate. In a generator, rotation of the armature induces current in the armature winding. The commutator and brushes are used to redirect the current flow and output pure DC power.

Faraday’s Law

• Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction: -

 The induced electromotive force (EMF or voltage) in any closed circuit
is equal to the negative of the time rate of change of the magnetic
flux enclosed by the circuit.
For a coil of wire of N turns, induced EMF is given as: -
d d
e e  N
dt dt

 The negative sign indicates that the direction of EMF is opposite to the
source that produces it
d
dt
 is the number of magnetic field lines that a conductor intersects
per unit time
