Presentation Pipe Jacking Rev03

This document discusses sewer pipe jacking methods for the N109A civil contract. Sewer pipe jacking involves tunneling a sewer line between entry and exit shafts using a microtunneling machine. The presentation covers the pipe jacking layout and sequence, including constructing entry/exit shafts, installing a tunnel boring machine, excavating soil with the machine, and jacking pipes into place between the shafts. Risks of the process include maintaining control of slurry pressure, alignment, and stability during tunneling in variable ground conditions.

PRINCIPLES OF MICRO TUNNELING SYSTEM

1. To counter balance earth pressures automatically
by mechanically managing the excavation speed,
cutting face pressure, jacking speed and jacking
force.
2. To balance ground water pressure by managing the
slurry pressure, flow, and density or viscosity.

MICRO TUNNELING – The Shield

1. The Shield Machine
•The cutter heads or cutter is located at the front of pipe
line. It cuts down the soil ahead using mechanical motion
into smaller fragments.
•The slurry flow control valves are operated hydraulically or
electrically.
•The pipe alignment is achieved by a laser beam
transmitted from the jacking shaft to a target mounted
behind the cutter head in the shield.
•The shield is remotely controlled, all information are
transmitted to the operator by a camera mounted in front
of the Indication cum Target Board.
•As the shield is moving forward, the excavated soil is
pressed into the openings on the face of the shield. The
excavated materials are mixed with the charging slurry in
the slurry chamber and pumped to the surface through the
slurry discharge line.

MICRO TUNNELING – The Slurry Transportation

System
2. The Slurry System
• The system is capable of any adjustment required to
maintain face stability for all soil condition.
• The balancing of the ground water pressure is
managed by use of variable-speed slurry discharging
pump, pressure control valves and an electromagnetic
flow meter. The by-pass unit allows the direction of
flow to be changed, and/or isolated. It also enable
blockage to be cleared by reversing the flow.
• All signals are transmitted to the control panel housed
in the cabin.
• A camera shall also be installed to allow the operator
to view the operation of the Disposal plants.
• Settlement tanks are included in the slurry system to
allow the heavy sediments and sand to settle from the
excavated soil. The settled slurry is re-circulated. If
space permits a sand separating plant is also included.

MICRO TUNNELING – The Jacking Systems

3. The Jacking Systems
 Pressure plate: A fabricated structure is installed between the
jacks and the thrust wall, for distributing and transmitting the
jacking force onto the thrust wall.
 Thrust ring: A steel ring placed between the main jacks and
the rear end of the jacking pipe for distributing the jacking
force around the end face of the pipe wall.
 Guide rails: A pair of steel beams for supporting the shield
machine and the pipe and to align them with the required
line and grade.

4. The Control System (Control Cabin)
• Real-time line and level checks
• Maintains accuracy in difficult ground
• Allows remote operations

system).
2. Competent and qualified Confined Space Safety Assessors (CSSA) to conduct
atmospheric check every 4 hours interval.
3.
a. Oxygen level shall be of range 19.5 to 23.5%.
b. The level of flammable gas or vapor in the confined space is less than
10% of its lower explosive limit.
c. Level of toxic substance in atmosphere of the confined space does not
exceed the levels as specified in the first schedule of the Workplace
Safety and Health (General Provisions) Regulations.
4. Continuous force ventilation shall be provided.
