AI in Robotics

Artificial intelligence is being used in robotics to give robots computer vision, enable them to learn tasks from humans through machine learning, and perform jobs autonomously. Weak AI allows robots to retrieve predefined responses, while strong AI allows robots to work independently. AI is applied in healthcare robotics, agricultural robotics, automotive manufacturing robotics, and warehouse robotics. Examples where companies are using AI include Honda's humanoid robot ASIMO, Sight Machine providing anomaly detection for Komatsu robots, and an AUTOParkit automated parking solution powered by Siemens controls using AI.

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence
What do you call a machine that looks like a human and can even act like a human in
certain situations? If you guessed Robot, you are correct!!! And Robotics is a field that
deals with the creation and designing of these mechanical humans. And Robotics these
days is not only restricted to the mechanical and electronics domain.

Let’s first address the most basic questions:

1. What exactly is a ROBOT?
Robots are a combination of hardware as well as software working in sync with each
other. They are the first-known automated type machines people got to know. There was a
time when robots were developed for performing specific tasks, yes such machines were
earlier developed without any artificial intelligence(AI) to perform only repetitive tasks.
2. And what is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence is a computer program that mainly focuses
on the development and analysis of algorithms which in other
words means that AI is a computer program that is capable of
creating a machine having its own intelligence and behavior.

Robotics is a field of science that is responsible for designing and

creating machines to reduce human effort.
Artificial intelligence and robotics are a strong combination for
automating tasks inside and out of doors of the factory setting.
In recent years, AI has become an increasingly common presence
in robotic solutions, introducing flexibility and learning
capabilities in previously rigid applications.
How AI is Being Used in Robotics?

How do Robots and Artificial Intelligence work together?

The answer is simple. Artificial Intelligence or AI gives robots a computer vision to navigate,
sense and calculate their reaction accordingly. Robots learn to perform their tasks from
humans through machine learning which again is a part of computer programming and AI.
Depending on the use and the tasks that the robot has to perform different types of AI is
used. They are as follows:
1. Weak Artificial Intelligence
This type of AI is used to create a simulation of human thought and interaction. The robots
have predefined commands and responses. However, the robots do not understand the
commands they do only the work of retrieving the appropriate response when the suitable
command is given. The most suitable example of this is Siri and Alexa.
2. Strong Artificial Intelligence
This type of AI is used in those robots who perform their
tasks on their own. They do not need any kind of supervision
once they are programmed to do the task correctly. This type
of AI is widely used nowadays as many of the things are
becoming automated and one of the most interesting
examples is self-driving cars and internet cars. This type of AI
is also used in humanoid robots which can sense their
environment quite well and interact with their surroundings.
APPLICATION OF AI IN ROBOTICS
1. Robotics in Healthcare
Robotics in healthcare are now playing a big role in providing an automated solution to medicine and other divisions
in the industry. From medical supplies, to sanitization, disinfection and performing the remote surgeries, AI in
robotics making such machines become more intelligent learned from the data and performs various crucial tasks
without the help of humans.

2. Robotics in Agriculture
In the agriculture sector, automation is helping farmers to improve crop yield and boost productivity. And robotics is
playing a big role in the cultivation and harvesting the crops with precise detection of plants, vegetables, fruits, and
other unwanted floras.
3. Robotics in Automotive
The automobile industry moved to the automation that leads to fully-
automated assembly lines to assemble the vehicles. Except for a few
important tasks, there are many processes performed by robotics to
develop cars reducing the cost of manufacturing.

4. Robotics at Warehouses
Warehouse needs manpower to manage the huge amount of inventory
kept by mainly eCommerce companies to deliver the products to their
customers or move from location to another location.
Examples Of AI In Robotics
1. Honda
Honda’s ASIMO has become something of a celebrity. This advanced humanoid robot has been programmed to walk
like a human, maintain balance, and do backflips. But now AI is being used to advance its capabilities with an
eventual view toward autonomous motion.

2. Sight Machine And Nissan

Sight Machine, the developer of a manufacturing data platform, has partnered with Nissan to use AI to perform
anomaly detection on 300 robots working on an automated final assembly process. This system provides predictions
and root-cause analysis for downtime.

3. Sight Machine And Komatsu

Sight Machine, in close cooperation with Komatsu, has developed a system that can rapidly analyze 500
million data points from 600 welding robots. The AI-based system can provide early warning of potential
downtime and other welding faults.
4. Kawasaki
Kawasaki has a large offering of robots that are primarily used in fixed
installations. But now it is working on robotic mobility and that takes AI.

3. Siemens And AUTOParkit

Siemens and AUTOParkit have formed a partnership to bring parking
into the 21st century. Using Siemens automation controls with AI, the
AUTOParkit solution provides a safe valet service without the valet.
This fully automated parking solution can achieve 2:1 efficiency over a
conventional parking approach, AUTOParkit says. It reduces parking-
related fuel consumption by 83% and carbon emissions by 82%. In such
a complex system, specialized vehicle-specific hardware and
software work together to provide smooth and seamless parking
experience that is far faster than traditional parking. Siemens controls
use AI to pull it all together.
