Chapter 3 Biodiversity)

This document discusses the classification of living organisms. It explains that living things can be classified as either animals or plants based on their characteristics. Animals are classified by their habitat and breathing organs, while plants are classified by their habitat, type of stem, and method of reproduction. The document provides examples of invertebrates like crabs and beetles, as well as vertebrates including fish, birds, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles. It also lists examples of plants such as trees, crops, and fungi. Classification keys use pairs of opposite characteristics to systematically identify organisms.

VARIETY OF LIVING ORGANISMS AND THEIR CLASSIFICATION

Living things found on Earth are human, animals & plants. A living thing is known as an organism. Differences that exists between the same species of living things are called variations.

Animals and plants can be classified based on common characteristics. CLASS ACTIVITY
1. Write down the name of animals and plants given by your teacher on a piece of paper. 2. For animals, the characteristics that you can use to classify them are habitat and breathing organs. 3. For plants, the characteristics that you can use to classify them are habitat, type of stem and method of reproduction.

1) A dichotomous key of identification is used

to classify organisms.
2) Pairs of opposite characteristics are used in the identification key. At each instance, a pair of opposite characteristics are used.

3) Construction of animals and plants classification can be done using chart and statements.

1. Animals which do not have backbones.

2. They make up the most number of animals in the world. 3. Most invertebrates live in water. 4. Some invertebrates have a hard external skeleton for protection (exp: Crab & Beetle) 5. Some invertebrates have soft bodies and use their body fluids for support (exp: Earthworms & Leeches) * Name four other invertebrates that have not been mentioned.

1. Animals with backbones. 2. Warm-blooded vertebrates (homoeothermic) have fixed body temperatures. 3. Cold-blooded vertebrates (poikilothermic) have body temperatures that change according to the temperature of their surroundings. 4. Vertebrates can be divided into five main groups which are: * FISH * BIRDS * AMPHIBIANS * MAMMALS * REPTILES

What is the difference between humans and other mammals? 2. State the body temperature of the following vertebrates at the surrounding temperature of 20C (a) Frog (b) Human 3. Why do dolphins, caught in fishing nets, die after some time?
1.

1. DOLPHINS USE LUNGS TO BREATHE. AFTER SOME TIME, THEY WILL DIE IN THE FISHING NETS AS THEY ARE NO LONGER IN THE SEA. THIS IS BECAUSE,THE ALVEOLUS SURFACE INSIDE THE LUNGS HAVE TO BE CONSTANTLY MOIST IN ORDER FOR THE EXCHANGE OF GASES TO BE EFFECTIVE.
