Ores

Ores are rocks that contain a high percentage of minerals

Think – What do you already know?

Where do we find gold?

Is it chemically combined with any other element?
Does it need to be separated from other
substances?
Are all other metals found the same as gold is?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXTSels6e2Y
However, most metals are found combined with
other elements as compounds in rocks in the
Earth’s crust. These metals need to be extracted.
Can you remember the missing words?
Extracting metals from ores
• Ores are rocks that contain enough of a 1.

compound to extract a metal for a profit.

• e.g. the ore haematite (iron ore) contains
enough iron oxide for it to be profitable to
3.

extract iron from it.

• Some metals can be extracted by heating their
compounds with carbon.5.

4.
2.
Carbon would be here
in the reactivity series

Carbon can be used to

extract a metal from its
oxide if the metal is LESS
reactive than carbon.
Looking at ores and metals………..
• Look at the samples of ores and the metals
extracted from them.
• Each metal is revealed under the ore it is
extracted from.
Method – Extracting the Copper

A Put one spatula full of copper oxide in

a test tube.

B Put one spatula full of carbon in the

tube. Do not mix them.

C Heat the test tube on blue flame in a

Bunsen for 10-15 mins.

D Leave the tube to cool down on the

heatproof mat for a few minutes.
Iron
Iron is extracted by heating iron oxide (taken from iron ore)
with carbon. Explain what happens.

The carbon removes the oxygen and forms carbon dioxide,

leaving the iron.

Can you write a word equation for this?

Iron oxide + carbon iron + carbon dioxide

Carbon would be here
in the reactivity series

Carbon can be used to

extract a metal from its
oxide if the metal is LESS
reactive than carbon.
Why can’t aluminium be
extracted from aluminium
oxide using carbon?
Carbon would be here in
the reactivity series

Aluminium is more
reactive than carbon…..
so we need a different
method of separating
metals higher than
carbon (and zinc) in the
reactivity series.
Aluminium
Aluminium is extracted from its ore bauxite
(which contains aluminium oxide) by
electrolysis of its molten compound.
The aluminium and oxygen are separated using
electricity.

Can you write a word equation for this?

aluminium oxide aluminium + oxygen
Think about…
• Why do chemists use heating with carbon where possible,
even though it is possible to extract all metals using
electricity?
• Why is aluminium used less than iron despite being more
abundant in the Earth’s crust than iron?

• Why is the method of extraction related to the metal’s

reactivity and cost of the extraction process?
• Why is aluminium more expensive to buy than iron?
The more reactive a
metal is, the harder it
is to extract.

The harder a metal is to extract, the more it costs to extract.

e.g. electrolysis costs more than heating with carbon due to the cost
of electricity. Electricity costs more than carbon!
So, the more reactive a metal, the harder and more expensive it is to
extract.

Cloze Sentence Summary
A few metals are found on Earth as 1.elements. These are low
reactivity metals such as gold, 2.silver and 3.platinum. Most
metals are found in 4.compounds in rocks called 5.ores. An ore
is a rock from which a metal can be extracted for 6.profit.

Low reactivity metals are extracted by heating the ore with

7.carbon. An example of a metal that has to be extracted from
its ore this way is 8.iron. High reactivity metals are extracted by
9.electrolysis. An example of a metal that has to be extracted
from its ore this way is 10.aluminium.
