Lecture 1 - Introduction To Disaster and Risk Management

This document discusses disasters from several perspectives. It begins by noting that descriptions of disasters and their management date back to ancient flood stories. It then explores the etymology of the term "disaster" and provides definitions from the WHO and American Red Cross. Disasters are classified as natural or man-made, with natural disasters further divided into meteorological, topographical, and environmental types. Man-made disasters include technological, industrial, and warfare categories. Various examples are provided for each classification. The document concludes by assigning students an activity to research and present on one of the disaster classifications in groups.
