Quarter1 Week2 Lesson2Blood and Gas Exchange

The cardiovascular and circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules throughout the body. The heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the lungs via the pulmonary circuit where carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen. The oxygenated blood then returns to the heart and is pumped via the systemic circuit through the aorta to nourish the organs and tissues of the body before returning to the heart depleted of oxygen but laden with carbon dioxide to begin the process again. Key parts of this system include the heart, blood vessels, and blood which work in tandem to sustain life.

Introduction Competency

Cardiovascular System is an
organ system that permits blood You are expected to explain
to circulate and transport how the respiratory system

provide cells with nutrients nutrients, gases, and other
needed. molecules to and from the
different parts of the body.
E S • 1. Identify parts of the body that is responsible

C T
J E for the exchange of gases, nutrients, and blood.
O B

• 2. Explain how blood travels through the heart

and lungs

• 3. Illustrate the exchange that happens to the

lungs and heart
The Heart
• It is just as big as one’s own clenched fist.

• A sac known as the PERICARDIUM

encloses the heart
Circulatory System
Functions
1. Responsible in transporting materials
throughout the entire body (nutrients,
water, oxygen)
2. Heals and fights infections
3. Removes waste materials
Two Divisions of
Circulatory System

Cardiovascular System- Lymphatic System- transports the

transports blood fluid called lymph
Three Major parts of
Circulatory System
• 1. The Heart
• A muscular organ that pumps blood to
the different parts of the body.
• Location: at the middle of the clavicle
directly below the nipple with its tip or
apex slightly tilted towards the left.
2. Blood Vessels
The Blood Vessels in the Heart
• Blood vessels are connected to the
heart.
• Vena cava- the largest vein that conveys
oxygen-poor blood coming from all
parts of the body back to the right
atrium.
• Aorta- largest artery. It conveys
oxygen-rich blood pumped by the left
ventricle to all parts of the body.
Types of Blood • Blood vessels are the network of
channels that convey blood to all
Vessels parts of the body.

• Arteries – Carries oxygen-rich blood

away from the heart
• Veins – Carries blood back to the heart
• Capillaries – Delivers low-oxygen
blood to veins (smallest and the most
numerous blood vessels)
3. Blood
• A liquid tissue and the circulating
BLOOD medium of the cardiovascular
system
• Comprises 8% of the human body
weight
• An average adult has about 5 to 6
LITERS of blood

• Functions:
1.Transport materials
2.Fight infections
The Tissue Layers of the Heart
• EPICARDIUM- Outer Layer

• MYOCARDIUM- Middle Layer

• ENDOCARDIUM- Inner Layer

SEPTUM- divides
the heart into four
chambers.

Chambers of the Heart

Chambers of the Heart

• ATRIA/ATRIUM – receiving chambers,

thin walled

 right atrium- receives oxygen- poor

(CO2) blood from the vena cava

 left atrium- receives oxygenated(O2)

blood from the pulmonary veins
Chambers of the Heart

• VENTRICLES- pumping chambers that

force blood out of the heart, thick walled

 right ventricle- pumps (CO2) blood to

the lungs for oxygenation

 left ventricle- pumps oxygen-rich (O2)

blood to all parts of the body
The Valves of the Heart
• Valves are flaps of muscles that
prevent blood from back flowing.

• Atrioventricular valves (also known

as cuspid valves) are located between
the atria and ventricles

• Semilunar valves are located at the

bases of the large vessels leaving the
ventricles.
Atrioventricular Valve

• Right atrioventricular valve is the

tricuspid valve

• Left atrioventricular valve is

bicuspid or mitral valve
Semilunar Valve

Pulmonary semilunar valve- it is

between the right ventricle and
pulmonary artery.

Aortic semilunar valve- between

the left ventricle and the aorta
