NSTP1 Values and Ethics

This document provides an overview of values, ethics, and unethical behavior as part of a National Service Training Program. It defines values as those things that are important or valued by an individual or organization. Values determine what is right or wrong, known as ethics. Causes of unethical behavior can be at the individual level, such as complexity of ethics issues or conflicting loyalties, or at the group level, like groupthink or negative responses to dissent. Ethical responses include exiting an organization if its behavior does not meet one's standards.

Values & Ethics
Values
Values can be defined as those things that
are important to or valued by someone. That
someone can be an individual or,
collectively, an organization. One place
where values are important is in relation to
vision.

price, something precious, dear and
worthwhile.
Values
Values also refers to everything from
eternal ideas to behavioral actions.
It serves as criteria for determining the
levels of goodness, worth, or beauty.

of making value judgements, an
expression of feeling, or the acquisition

Values VS Ethics
ETHICS VALUES ETHICS VALUES
Values & Ethics
 Perhaps the first place to look in determining what is
right or wrong is society. Virtually every society makes
some determination of morally correct behavior.
 In Islamic countries, a determination of what is right or
moral is tied to religious structures.
 In societies more secular, the influence of religious
beliefs may be less obvious but still a key factor.
Values & Ethics
 The Ten Commandments, for many
people, define what is morally right or
wrong. Societies not only regulate the
behavior of their members, but also
define their societal core values.
Causes of Unethical Behavior
INDIVIDUAL
 Complexity ethics
 Competition for scarce
resources/power/position
 Conflicting loyalties
Causes of Unethical Behavior
GROUP
 Groupthink
 Presence of ideologues
 Negative organizational response to
