10 HISTORICAL MONUMENTS OF

ASSAM
THE RANG GHAR
The Rang Ghar, is a two-
storeyed building which once
served as the royal sports-
pavilion where Ahom kings
and nobles were spectators at
games like buffalo fights and
other sports at Rupahi Pathar -
particularly during the Rongali
Bihu festival in the Ahom
capital of Rangpur. It was
originally built during the era
of Swargadeo Rudra Singha.
THE TALATAL
GHAR
The Talatal Ghar is an 18th century
palace and military base located in
Rangpur, 4 kilometers from
present-day Sivasagar, Assam,
India. It is the largest of the
monument built during the Ahom
era. King Rudra Singha was
responsible for the construction of
Kareng Ghar, but the present
structure was built by king
Rajeswar Singha. It was initially
built as an army base. It had 2
tunnels and 3 underground floors.
THE KARENG GHAR

Karenghar is the largest monument of


the Ahom Kingdom which was built
under the leadership of King Rudra
Singha during the period from 1696 to
1714. It is a seven storeys palace, three
of which is under the surface and is
called the Talatalghar while rest four
storeys, Karenghar is above the
surface. The Palace was strategically
built to combat enemy attacks and has
two secret underground tunnels one of
which is 16 kilometers long, these
tunnels were used as escape routes
during enemy attacks.
THE SHIVA
D0L
Shiva Dol is the tallest Shiva
temple in the entire Northeast
India. It is the highest temple
in the country as well with a
height of 104 feet. The
Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol are
other two small temples
surrounding this tall temple
and are dedicated to Lord
Vishnu and Goddess Durga.
These temples are situated on
the banks of the famous
Sivsagar Lake which is more
than 200 years old.
MAHABHAIRAB
TEMPLE
The ancient Mahabhairav
Temple is located at a hillock on
the northern part of Tezpur town,
Assam. This temple is believed
to have been established by king
Bana in the pre-historical times.
This Shiva temple was originally
built of stone but the present one
was renovated and built with
concrete. During the Ahom rule,
the kings especially of the
Tungkhungiya dynasty donated
large area of Devotee land to the
Temple and appointed
pujaris ,Paiks to look after the
temple.
KAMAKHYA
TEMPLE
The Kamakhya Temple,
is one of the oldest
Hindu temples in
Guwahati, Assam, and
the subcontinent. The
temple is on Nilachal
hills. It is one of the
oldest and most revered
places where Tantric
practices are done. It is
named after the mother
goddess Kamakhya.
UMANANDA TEMPLE
The Umananda temple,
located on the Peacock Island,
is one of the important
temples of Guwahati. Situated
in the middle of River
Brahmaputra, this temple is
dedicated to the worship of
Lord Shiva. During the
festival of Shivratri, every
year, a large number of
devotees visit this temple. It
was constructed in 1694 by
Bar Phukan Gadadhar Singha,
under the orders of King
Gadadhar Singha, a prominent
ruler of the Ahom kingdom.
NAMDANG STONE
BRIDGE

Namdang Stone Bridge is


a bridge cut out from a
single solid rock over the
Namdang River. It was
constructed by workmen
brought from the Bengal
during the reign of
Swargadeo Rudra Singha
in 1703. It is a strong
bridge of 60 metres in
length and 6.5 meters in
breadth.
BASISTHA
TEMPLE
The Basistha Temple in
Guwahati is located in the south
eastern corner of the city. This
temple is dedicated to Lord
Shiva and was constructed by
Rajeswar Singha in the year
1764. This temple is built inside
an ashram. It is said that a saint
named Vasistha lived in this
ashram, and thus, it has been
named as the Basitha Ashram.
One can see here many
sculptures made of stones and
terracotta
AGNIGARH
Agnigarh is a hillock
located in Tezpur,
Assam. In Hindu
mythology, it is the
site of the fortress
which was built by
Banasura to keep his
daughter Usha in
isolation. The name
itself is derived from
the words 'Agni' and
'garh' in Sanskrit.
