Types of Instructional Planning

Long range planning involves planning instruction for the entire school year and addressing both short and long-term goals. It includes determining what students will learn and how they will learn. Planning should address goals in students' Individualized Education Programs. Long range planning is challenging for new teachers but important because it helps teachers stay organized and focused on covering all necessary content over the year. Curriculum mapping aligns instruction with goals by documenting what is taught and when, revealing gaps. It helps take a student-centered approach by identifying ways to differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs.

Long-range planning is a great way for teachers to stay organized. It also keeps them
focused on what they need to accomplish throughout the year. By taking the time to
plan out their units and themes, teachers can ensure that they are covering all of the
necessary content.
