11 - Data Obtained During WT

Data obtained during a well test includes day-to-day results like gas composition, water cut, pressures, temperatures, and flow rates. It also provides long-term results like permeability, skin factor, initial reservoir pressure, and drainage area after interpretation. This data helps petroleum engineers evaluate the well and reservoir characteristics and performance.

DATA OBTAINED DURING A WELL
TEST
Lecture Objectives,
by the end of this lecture, YOU should be
able to:

- List Data obtained during a WT (day to

day results / actual)
- List Data obtained during a WT (long term
results / after interpretation)
DATA OBTAINED DURING A WELL
TEST
Day to day results for the Petroleum Engineer:
1. Rough Gas composition (H2S, CO2)
Draeger pump with reactive tubes
2. BSW (Basic Sediment & Water)
Hand or electric centrifuge machine
3. WHP (Well Head Pressure)
DWT, Foxboro chart recorder, Dial gauge
4. WHT (Well Head Temperature)
Alcohol thermometer, Foxboro

Day to day results for the Petroleum Engineer: (cont)

5. Specific Gravity for OIL

Hydrometer, Thermometer, (oil outlet separator)
6. Specific Gravity for GAS
Ranarex gravitometer
7. OIL flowrate
2” or 3” oil meter (oil outlet separator)
8. GAS flowrate
Barton chart recorder, Daniel orifice meter

9. WATER flowrate
2” meter (water outlet separator) and/or BSW
10. Water Salinity (if any H20?)
Often done by rig’s mud-engineer
11. Plots P, T, Q /vs/ Time
Surface data acquisition (STAN)
12. OIL Pour point, Viscosity
Rarely asked during a SWT

13. OIL sample (non-pressurized)

From oil outlet separator, tank.
4 liters or 200 liters (metallic cans & grounded).
14. WATER sample (non-pressurized)
From bottom separator or H2O sight-glass.
4 liters or 200 liters (metallic cans & grounded).
Notes: Bulk (large quantity) samples.

15. OIL Surface PVT sample (pressurized)

Bottom oil sight-glass from separator.
Oilphase oil sample bottle.
16. GAS Surface PVT sample (pressurized)
(Top horizontal section)is recomended section of
Gas outlet separator.
Oilphase gas sample bottle.
Note: Oil & Gas samples taken in the same time,
under separator conditions.

17. Bottom-Hole Sample

RIH an Oilphase sampler in front of the
perforations, to catch a representative fluid
from the reservoir.
Rough Gas composition at CM,
as soon as fluid reach to surface
Draeger pump

Example: H2S, CO2

H2S= 4ppm
CO2= 13 %

up)
Flowrate at surface v/s Time
Gravities (Oil & Gas SG)
Geology data: Porosity, Viscosity
Drilling data: Pay zone, Wellbore radius

Long Term Results are given to the Reservoir

Eng.
DATA OBTAINED DURING A WELL
TEST
Long term results for the Reservoir Engineer:
• Permeability (K)
ex: K= 10 md (millidarcy) tight formation
K= 500 md High
permeability
2. Skin Factor (S) , vicinity of well bore, around
perforations (due to mud, mud-cake, perforations
system)
ex: S= 10 Damaged formation
S= 2 (or –1) Good (after Acid job)
DATA OBTAINED DURING A WELL
TEST
Long term results for the Reservoir Engineer:

3. Obtain initial or average reservoir

pressure (Pi)
4. Calculate the radius of investigation
(rw) or drainage area.
5. Determine presence of reservoir
discontinuities or anomalies such as
boundaries, fractures, etc.

TEST
Long term results for the Reservoir Engineer:

5. Check reservoir limits and estimate

reservoir size.
6. Evaluate well performance
(Productivity) vs time from any
tendencies observed during the test.
