Team Building
Building a team is a process that goes through different stages

• Stage 1 – forming
• Tuckman
• Stage 2 – storming
• Stage 3 – norming model
• Stage 4 – performing
• Stage 5 – adjourning

Stage 1 forming team

• Identifying members skills and talents

• find out which behaviors will be acceptable to the rest of the


group members.
• Establish common goals

• Setting ground rules

• create trust among team members. 7


Stage 2 storming

Team members are:-


• encouraged to participate and engage with the issues
and decisions
• may challenge, disagree with, and question one another.

• uncomfortable for some members

• but it is an important stage in tackling problems.

Stage 3 norming
• members come together and plan together for common
purpose.
• Members are clear what their roles and responsibilities are
and how they fit into the team.
• tries to work together.

• they know how to work with each other.

Stage 4 performing
• effectively handle disagreements and misunderstandings.
• Differences have minimized and members have dealt with
them.
• focused on accomplishing its common goal, objectives,
vision and purpose.

Stage 5: Adjourning

• team's work is completed, and the team dissolves.

• The members may go their separate ways, or they may stay

together to form a new team.

• Effective leaders encourage their bonding to next activities

• Unclear goals and objectives
• Non-measurable goals
• Poorly defined boundaries and responsibilities
• Inappropriate leadership style and behavior
• Ineffective meetings
• Unwillingness of team members to accept responsibility
• Individually oriented rewards and/or recognition

Symptoms of a failing team
• Absence at scheduled meetings/events
• Late arrival and early departure

• Substitutes, time and time again


• Chronic complaining and non-constructive criticism

• Domination
• Drop outs (from the team)

As a team leader, you should encourage your team
members to further develop;
• Drive: Each team member must have a certain amount of drive to attain
team goals (develop initiatives)

• Confidence: All team members should feel self-assured about their


technical abilities

• Discipline: Good workers are disciplined

• Desire: A hunger to get better all the time is a constant motivator for team
players.

• Loyalty: Team loyalty is critical in any workplace, especially in the


healthcare industry.

Maintaining and Reinforcing a Strong Team
Orientation
• The most useful Strategies continually to motivate teams and
improve efficiency;

• Point team members back to established, common objectives.


» Stage 5 in team building
• All team members need to know the objectives and mission.

• Recognize individual talents and ask for suggestions on how


each individual’s talent can be applied to the team.
