ERE
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, I will be able to:

1.Describe the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

2.Describe the composition of Earth’s atmosphere.
3.Explain the significance of the layers and the boundaries
between them.
ATMOSPH
ERE
An atmosphere is made of the layers of
gases surrounding a planet or other celestial
body.
ATMOSPH
ERE
Earth’s atmosphere is composed of about
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and one
percent other gases.
ATMOSPH
ERE
The atmosphere acts as a gigantic filter,
keeping out most ultraviolet radiation while
letting in the sun’s warming rays.
Earth’s atmosphere has a
layered structure. From the
ground toward the sky, the
layers are
the troposphere, stratosphere,
mesosphere, thermosphere,
and exosphere. Another layer,
called the ionosphere, extends
from the mesosphere to the
exosphere.

above the Earth’s surface and
contains approximately 75 to 80 %
of the mass of the Earth’s
atmosphere. It is characterized by
decreasing temperature with
increasing altitude.
STRATOSPH
ERE
The stratosphere extends from
the tropopause, the upper boundary of
the troposphere, to about 50 kilometers
(32 miles) above Earth’s surface. This
is ideal for planes that can fly in this
part of the atmosphere. The
stratosphere is crucial to life on Earth
because it contains small amounts
of ozone, a form of oxygen that
prevents harmful UV rays from
reaching Earth.
MESOSPHER
Edirectly above the
The mesosphere is
stratosphere and below the
thermosphere. It extends from about
50 to 85 km (31 to 53 miles) above
our planet. The air is still thin, so
you wouldn’t be able to breathe up
in the mesosphere. But there is more
gas in this layer.
THERMOSP
HERE
The thermosphere is the thickest
layer in the atmosphere. Only the
lightest gases—mostly oxygen,
helium, and hydrogen—are found
here. The Hubble Space
Telescope and the International
Space Station (ISS) orbit Earth in the
thermosphere.
EXOSPH
EREis the very edge of
The exosphere
our atmosphere. This layer separates
the rest of the atmosphere from outer
space. It's about 6,200 miles (10,000
kilometers) thick. That's almost as
wide as Earth itself.
