Early Christian architecture developed between 313-800 AD as the Roman Empire split into eastern and western halves. Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople in the East, dividing imperial rule. The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, while the Eastern Byzantine Empire continued until 1453 AD. Distances and theological differences between Rome, Byzantium, and northern Ostrogoths led to the emergence of distinct Early Christian and Byzantine architectural styles as Christianity spread throughout the former Roman territories.
