Linear

Equations
in Two
Variables
Definition:

A linear equation in two variables is an equation

that can be written in two forms:

Standard form:
𝑨𝒙 + 𝑩𝒚 = 𝑪 𝐨𝐫 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 = 𝒄
where A, B, and C are real numbers, and A and
B are both nonzero.

Slope-Intercept form:
𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
where m is a slope and b is the y-intercept, m and
b are real numbers, and 𝑚 ≠ 0.
Example
1:Determine whether or not each equation is a
linear
equation in two variables. If so, Identify A, B, and C.

a. 𝟓𝒙 = 𝟏𝟎 + 𝟑𝒚
b. 𝒚 = 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟗
c. 𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚 = 𝟗
𝟓
d. 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟖
e. 𝒙𝒚 = 𝟏𝟎

Slope
of a
Definition
:
The slope m of a line is the
ratio of the change in the y-
coordinates to the
corresponding change in the
x- coordinates.
Slope is the steepness of a
line.

Slope is the rise over the run, the change in

′y′ over the change in ′x′, or the gradient of a
line.
Types

Graphing Linear Equations Using the
Point- Plotting Method

To graph linear equations:

1. Find at least two points that satisfy
the equation by assigning values for
x and solving for y.
2. Form ordered pair (x,y).
3. Plot the points on the rectangular plane
and connect the points to form a straight
line.

x-intercept: the point where the graph intersects the

x- axis
y-intercept: the point where the graph intersects the
y- axis

Intercepts of a Line
1. The x-intercept of a line is the value of x when y=0.
To find the x-intercept, let y = 0 and solve for x.
2.The y-intercept of the line is the value of y when x
= 0. To find the y-intercept, let x = 0 and solve for y.

Graphing Linear Equations Using the
Slope- Intercept Method
The linear equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 is in slope-intercept
form. The slope of the line is m. Its y-intercept is b.

Strategy for Graphing a Line Using Its Slope and y-

intercept
1. Express the equation in slope-intercept
form, if necessary.
2. Plot the y-intercept (0,b).
3. Starting from the y-intercept, use the rise and
run in locating a second point.
4. Draw a line by connecting the two points.
