INTRODUCTION TO

MEDIA AND
INFORMATION
LITERACY
Can you describe what is in the

WHAT DOES LITERATE MEAN? WHAT
DO WE EXPECT FROM A PERSON WHO
IS LITERATE?
The word LITERATE refers to a person who does
not only read and write but also understand and solve
problems. Literate can also mean that a person is
knowledgeable or well versed about a specific subject,
such as history and science.
Looking back to things you did last week, as you use the social media
and other information providers (e.g. Internet, social media,
television, radio, news, etc.).

Please specify how many hours you spent in each media or


information provider. It’s not important to be exact, and the number
of hours you spend every week can be calculated.;

FORMS OF
COMMUNICATI

1. INTRAPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
It is a communication that happens to
you. Here both the source (sender) and
the receiver are just one. So, the
feedback works without interruption.
For example, a person may
communicate through pain, thought,
feelings and emotion, etc.
2. DYADIC COMMUNICATION
Two people are involved in this contact
phase in dyadic communication. Here
the Source becomes the receiver, and
the receiver becomes the source because
of the complex communication
mechanism where feedback is
exchanged between the source the
receiver.
3. SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION
More than two participants in the
communication process would become a
communication group. In this
communication process, everyone
becomes a source as well as a receiver
by exchanging information and
providing feedback to others.
4. PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
Source or communication is from a
single person that can meet or receive a
wide number of audiences. But there is
no shared input between the source that
recipient in this conversation.
5. MASS COMMUNICATION
They have a huge number of audiences, and they
cannot all be put together in one place, so we need
some communication mechanism device or
technology. Yet there is no direct access to the
receiver in mass communication. That is why they
need media like the newspaper, the radio, the
television and the internet. Here, the input from
the viewer is much less or delayed.

MEDIA LITERACY
It is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate,
and create media. The word media refers to the
different means of communication, such as
television, newspapers, magazines, and the
internet. If you can understand the complex
messages from the media, then you are media
literate.
IMPORTANCE OF MEDIA
LITERACY
 It is the ability to exercise critical
thinking when analyzing different
forms of media. Through critical
thinking, a student can analyze and
evaluate the logical connection between
ideas.
 Student will be able to understand the
significant role of the media in our
society and how largely it influences its
users. If a person has skills in media
literacy, he will be able to discern what
information is factual, truthful, and
objective through critical thinking.
 Enables a person to become
competent in processing and
assessing the form of media one
uses. A media literate person can
think independently and makes his
own opinion instead of relying on
what the media dictates.
 It can help students become well
informed using the different forms of
mass media simultaneously. These
skills will allow students to develop an
intellectual and artistic sense on how
they can create useful and effective
forms of media by themselves.
INFORMATION
LITERACY
It pertains to a specific data acquired for a
specific purpose. Gathering information or data
depends upon the person’s need.

It is also the skill that allows a person to


recognize when information is needed and how he
will be able to access, locate, evaluate and use it
effectively.
IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION
LITERACY
 It lets you distinguish which among the
sources of information are relevant and
it also allows individual to discover
where to get the information, such as
visiting the library or going online to
make a research.
 It can also aid students in
developing effective research skills
in enriching their knowledge and
enhancing their comprehension.
Thus, the learner can utilize this
skill to expand his knowledge.
TECHNOLOGY
LITERACY
Technology comes from the words Greek word
techne ,which means art or skills, and
tekhnologia ,which means systematic treatment.
It is the ability to acquire relevant information
and use modern-day tools to get manage, apply,
evaluate, create, and communicate information. AS the
present technology continues to thrive, the concept of
technology literacy also changes.
IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY
LITERACY
 In this modern time, technology is associated
with machines, equipment, device, or any
invention that show advancement in scientific
knowledge, engineering, and computer
concepts.
 Students nowadays are very lucky because they
can easily access information using modern
technology.

RELEVANCE OF MEDIA AND
INFORMATION LITERACY TO
STUDENTS
 It is essential for you to become a media and
information literate individual as this will help
you acquire knowledge and process information
even if the subject you are studying is difficult to
understand.
 It can help students to conduct a well-organized
and thorough research.
 It can also develop students to become
globally competitive with their ability to
communicate using various forms of media.
 It enhances the ability of students to
comprehend and analyze information which
allow them to create a productive output
such as music video, using modern
technology.
CREATORS OF
MEDIA AND
INFORMATION
1. WRITERS & JOURNALISTS – They work in
publishing houses, news agencies, or
advertising firms. Their primary role is to
translate relevant and meaningful
information into printed materials, such as
books, newspapers, and magazines. They also
make sure that the readers will obtain
important information about the story or
article they are writing.
2. EDITORS – They ensure that the
manuscript or articles submitted by
the former are high in standard and
are fit to print. Editors also make sure
that the material to be published is
free from factual or grammatical
errors.
3. DIRECTORS – Also known as
filmmakers, directors create movies,
shows or programs, and plays that are
seen on theaters, television channels. A
director sees to it that the message of a
show is made clear to the audience.
4. PERFORMERS – The actors who
portray the characters in movies, shows,
and plays are called performers in general.
Other performers are the singers and
dancers who express their creativity and
inner thoughts through their craft, which
can either be a song or a dance.
5. VISUAL ARTISTS – Paintings and
sculptures are some of the masterpieces
that visual artists create. Visual artists
express their ideas through their artworks.
Some artworks may convey a clear message
while others have abstract symbols to
express the deeper thoughts of the artist.

1. TRUTHFULNESS – The
quality of being honest and not
containing or telling lies.
2. Fairness & Objectivity - To maintain
objectivity in journalism, journalists should
present the facts whether they like or agree
with those facts. Objective reporting is meant
to portray issues and events in a neutral and
unbiased manner, regardless of the writer's
opinion or personal beliefs.
3. Responsibility and Integrity - Media
practitioners are expected to show
professionalism of the situation they are
in. They should not compromise their
integrity by showing PARTIALITY or
PARTISANSHIP
4. Empathy is our ability to understand how
someone feels while sympathy is our relief in
not having the same problems. When we
relate with empathy, we give the other person
space to own their emotions and feelings.
5. Hardworking - people are well-organized and
efficient. They set aside time to complete tasks
because they plan and are proactive. Alongside,
They maintain track of everything they need to do.
Their planning helps them avoid time waste
because they do the right things at the right time in
the right order.
