3 Point Lighting

3-point lighting involves three lights - a key light, fill light, and back light. The key light is the brightest light that illuminates the subject from the front. The fill light adds light from the opposite side of the key to reduce shadows. The back light separates the subject from the background by lighting them from behind.

3 point lighting research

What is 3-point lighting?

• In 3-point lighting there are three lights:
• Key light- a full light and the strongest light in the set,
which will make the films have more life. It is a 650
watt tungsten lamp with a diffusion gel to make the
light softer. (20-40 degrees)
• Fill light- the fill light fills in the darkness and shadows
on the opposite side of the key light, it gives much
more light.
• Back light- the back light is placed behind the person
and creates a kind of halo effect around the edge of the
subject, it is separating the person from the backround
and is highlighting the contours.
What’s it mostly used in?
• It is mostly used in interviews and photography. It is used to
show how to create better lighting when filming and creating
photos. It helps bring in better lighting and block out any
darkness and shadows that would get on the camera when
filming or taking a photo.
What are the three lights setups names?
• key light

• Fill light

• backlight
What is their
purpose?
• For key light it uses 100%
of the power. Fill light is
50% or less of the light
used, as for backlight it is
used behind the subject
or in the distance from
them in the background.
But for the shadows they
ostly need to be of the
face in the background.
