The following IBCs are authorized, provided the general provisions of 4.1.1, 4.1.2, and 4.1.3 are met:
(1) Metal (31A, 31B,and 31N);
(2) Rigid Plastics (31H1,and 31H2);
(3) Composite (31HZ1)

Only liquids with a vapor pressure less than or equal to 110 kPa at 50°C, or 130 kPa at 55°C are authorized

Special packing provisions


B5 For UN Nos. 1791, 2014 and 3149, IBCs should be provided with a device to allow venting during transport. The
inlet to the venting device should be sited in the vapor space of the IBC under maximum filling conditions during
transport.
B8 The pure form of this substance should not be transported in IBCs since it is known to have a vapor pressure of
more than 110 kPa at 50°C, or 130 kPa at 55°C.
B11 For UN Nos. 1716, 1717, 1736, 1737, 1738, 1742, 1743, 1755, 1764, 1768,1776, 1778, 1782, 1789, 1790
1796, 1826, 1830, 1832, 2031, 2308, 2353, 2513, 2584, 2796, and 2817 coming under PG II, IBCs should

The following IBCs are authorized, provided the general provisions of 4.1.1, 4.1.2, and 4.1.3 are met:

Chapter 4.1 - Use of Packagings, Including
Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) and Large
Packagings
 4.1.0 - Definitions
 Effectively closed - Liquid tight closure
 Hermetically sealed - Vapor-tight closure
 Securely closed - dry contents cannot escape during
normal handling
 4.1.1 - General Provisions for packing dangerous goods in
packagings, including IBCs and large packagings.
NOTE: The general provisions of this section only apply to the
packing of goods of classes 2, 6.2 and 7 as indicated in 4.1.8.2
(class 6.2), 4.1.9.1.5 (class 7), and 4.1.4 packing instructions
P201, P621, IBC620, and LP621.

General Provisions
 4.1.1.1 - Dangerous goods should be packed:
 in good quality packaging
 strong enough to withstand shocks & handling
 constructed, closed to prevent loss of contents
 closed per manufacturers instructions
 clean with no residue on package

Applies to all new, re-used, reconditioned or remanufactured


packagings and new, re-used, repaired or remanufactured IBCs and to
new or reused large packagings

Testing and Ullage
4.1.1.3 - Unless provided elsewhere, each packaging
including IBCs and large packagings must conform
to a design type successfully tested in accordance with
• 6.1.5 (packagings)
• 6.3.2 (packaging for 6.2)
• 6.5.4 (IBCs)
• 6.6.5 (Large Packagings)

4.1.1.4 - Ullage (outage) left for expansion of liquids to prevent


leakage or permanent distortion of the packaging. Liquid shall
not completely fill a packaging at a temperature of 50°C.
Sufficient ullage shall be left in an IBC to insure that at the mean
bulk temperature of 55°C it is not filled to more than 98% of its
water capacity.

Empty Packagings, Melting goods,
and Salvage Packagings
4.1.1.11 - Empty Packagings including IBCs and Large Packagings,
that previously contained a dangerous substance should be treated
in the same manner as when they were full unless adequate
measures have been taken to nullify the hazards.

4.1.1.13 -Packaging authorized for solids which may become


liquefied at temperatures likely to be encountered during
transport shall also be capable of containing the substance in a
liquid state. (see 4.1.3.4)
4.1.1.16 Use of Salvage Packaging
•For damaged, defective, leaking, or non-conforming packagings
or dangerous goods that have spilled or leaked.
•Prevent excessive movement within the salvage packaging and
add absorbent material to absorb liquid. (compatible with the
goods)
•NOT used for shipment from premises where the goods are
produced

4.1.2 - Additional Provisions
for the Use of IBCs
.1 Flammable liquids or powders with explosive properties
should be grounded to prevent electrostatic discharge.

.2 Should NOT be filled and offered for transport after expiration


date for periodic test. (Chapt. 6.5). However, If filled prior to
expiration date may be transported for 3 months. In addition:

.1 May be transported after emptying before cleaning for


inspection or testing.

.2 Up to 6 mos. for return

4.1.3 - General Provisions
Concerning Packing Instructions
Packing Instructions correspond to codes in Column (8)
and (10) of the DG List and in;

• 4.1.4.1 - packaging other than IBCs and LP (P)


• 4.1.4.2 - Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs)
• 4.1.4.3 - Large Packagings (LP)
Special Packing Provisions may also apply within the
packing instruction if in Columns (9) or (11) as:

• “PP” for packagings other than IBCs and LP


• “B” for IBCs
• “L” for Large Packaging

4.1.3.5 - Special Packagings

Where a particular type outer packaging is authorized in the packing


instruction for combination packaging packagings bearing the same
packaging code followed by the letter: “V”, “U”, or “W”, may also be
used per the conditions and limitations of the packing instruction.

For example: 4GV used in place of a 4G.

“V” for special packaging per 6.1.5.1.7

“W” for an equivalent packaging per 6.1.1.2

“U” for Class 6.2 packaging per 6.3.2.9
