EDITORIAL WRITING

EDITORIAL WRITING
• An expression of fact and opinion in concise, logical,
pleasing order for the sake of entertaining, or
influencing opinion, or policies (L. Spencer, A.
Malinao, Journalism for Filipinos)
QUALITIES OF AN EDITORIAL

• Interesting
• Clear and effective reasoning and has the power to
influence the reader’s opinion
• Factual and contains information to support the side it
chooses to take.
• Concise
KINDS OF EDITORIAL
1. Editorial of Information – presents only the information about a particular
issue

2. Editorial of Interpretation – interprets or analyzes the event, situation or issue

to present the facts in a more meaningful and enlightening perspective to the
reader

3. Editorial of Argumentation – it also gives information and interpret, its

difference, takes a stand on a controversial issue and gives reason

4. Editorial of Criticism – similar to argumentation but this editorial tries to

present both sides of the issue or the pros and cons of the situation
KINDS OF EDITORIAL
5. Editorial of Persuasion – aims to persuade readers to support a program or a
plan of action by enumerating the advantages

6. Editorial of Commendation – commends, praises or pays tribute for the

successes, achievements of public figures

7. Editorial of Celebrating Special Occasion – highlights the significance of

celebrating special occasions like “Independence Day”
PARTS OF EDITORIAL

• Title – gives a gist of the topic

example:

Erroneous textbooks: a bitter pill

to our ailing education
PARTS OF EDITORIAL

• Introduction – contains the news peg and the reaction.

An introduction comes in different forms like a thought
provoking question, striking statement or narration of the
event.
Example:
The expose made by Dr. Antonio Calipjo-Go, an
academic supervisor in a private Marian School in Quezon
City, that some of the textbooks used by students are
erroneous, create a gigantic tremor that rocks our academe.
PARTS OF EDITORIAL

• Body – presents the factual details to bolster the opinion or

principle of the newpaper on the given issue.
- Arguments are arranged from the most significant to the least
significant
Example:
In Asya:Noon, Ngayon at sa Hinaharap, a 316-page
textbook used by the second year high school students in
Araling Panlipunan, Dr. Calipjo-Go has discovered that it
contains 431 errors.
As expected, those in the godly seat of our educational
system vehemently denied the findings of Dr. Calipjo-Go. Even
the authors of the said book threatened to file a case against the
professor, whose only mistake is his undying concern of saving
our educational system from dooming by bravely coming out
and expose the tip of the iceberg of errors of these widely used
textbooks.
Example:
After thorough evaluation, however, the Department of
Education has found out that indeed, Dr. Galipjo-Go is
right. Several textbooks used not only in public schools, but
also in the private schools are erroneous.
Nobody can deny that textbooks are the “holy bibles”
of the students. Majority of those in the public schools are
so dependent on the facts and figures supplied by these
books. If they are by erroneous information, these will be
implanted into their mind forever.
Example:
The same will be handed down to others unless by chance
along the way toward higher educational pursuit, they will
come across with the right information that will invalidate
and correct whatever erroneous information that they have
learned from the past.
These textbooks stained with errors are but bitter pills
that entangle our youth in the sty of ignorance. These negate
the objective of the government of providing quality
education to us students.
PARTS OF EDITORIAL

• Conclusion – presents a solution, plea, advice, command,

thought-provoking question, forecast, possible effects and
quotation relevant to the subject or just a summary.
Example:
The authors, as well as the concerned authorities who
are tasked to evaluate these books are guilty of thwarting
facts and injecting the wrong medication into the minds of
the students. They should be given the dose of their own
medicine.

Privacy at Risk
After many controversies regarding the national ID system, it was finally signed
into law by President Rodrigo Duterte on August 6, 2018. Though it promises to
improve the delivery of government services and to reduce corruption, it can create
serious problem as citizen’s privacy might be compromised.
According to RA 11055, the system aims to eliminate the need to present other
forms of identification when transacting with the government and private sector. It
also open up opportunities to the poor and marginalized and will also make public
service more efficient.
While the government vows to secure and to protect information stored in the
system, many are arguing that it could violate a person’s right to privacy. Some are
afraid that their personal information may be stolen and be used by hackers with just
one click.
In a survey conducted on October 2, 2018, 359 or 86.50% out of 415 grade six
pupils of SFPCES don’t want the government to have their personal information all
saying that they were scared of security breach.

“I am one of the 50 million Facebook accounts that was hacked last September. If
hackers could do this to a giant social media site, then it could also happen to the id
system of the government,” said Selina Kyle S. Tiu, Supreme Pupils Government
(SPG) president and a grade six pupil.
With the threat of hackers, how can we be sure that our records are safe especially
our finances?
Information drives about the new system must be done to spread awareness
among citizens. Authorities should make sure that worries on identity theft and data
breaches is baseless. #

Saving Life
Water is life. It profoundly affects our lives. When it’s gone, we have a serious
problem.
The municipality of San Francisco where the school is located has been
experiencing low supply of water for three months now. San Francisco Water District
(SFWD) reported that the water supply from reservoirs have dropped to 55% for the
month of September. This is the first time the community has suffered from water
shortage.
According to SFWD’s Industrial Relations Management Officer Ivy P. Doliguez,
the decrease of water is attributed to the lack of rain the municipality is experiencing
and the raise in temperature. Water flow in the reservoirs is now at 60 liters per
second (lps) which is below normal compared to its normal flow,133 lps. Heavy rain
for a day is not enough to bring back the water to its normal flow. It takes two to
three weeks of continuous rain.

Climate change and pollution are dwindling water sources as consumption

continued to rise from growing population and increasing demands from industries and
agriculture.
Moreover, presence of small scale miners and illegal loggers in Mt. Magdiwata
Watershed, the source of water in San Francisco, are also the reasons of water shortage.
With this, it is now time for us to start conserving water as well as protecting and
preserving the Mt. Magdiwata Watershed. Tree planting and reforestation activities
should be done. The government must take action on the illegal activities in the shed.
We should start these now or we will suffer the biggest consequences later.#
