Translation of Functions

This document discusses different types of parent functions and how their graphs can be transformed through translations. It explains that vertical translations move the graph up or down by adding or subtracting values outside the function, while horizontal translations move the graph left or right by adding or subtracting values inside the function. Examples are given of translating the quadratic function f(x)=x^2 vertically by adding 3, and horizontally by subtracting 2. Combining transformations is also demonstrated by shifting a cubic function down 4 units and right 6 units.

Horizontal Translations
The values that translate the graph of a
function will occur as a number added or

function.

Numbers added or subtracted inside

translate left or right, while numbers added
or subtracted outside translate up or down.
