E-commerce &
Digital India
•The platform for doing business has rapidly changed
from physical mom & pop stores & Kirana Shops to
Retail supermarkets & further to the web space where
Mobile based apps are the new shop keepers & store in
charges & payment gateways are the cashiers.
•This paradigm shift has been fueled by the extensive
growth of high speed internet connectivity with the
service providers slashing tariffs and providing
customers with 4G connectivity (slowly moving to 5G).
•The E-commerce market space is expected to grow
from somewhere around the $40 billion mark to $200
billion mark by 2026 (IBEF report)

The E-commerce Supply Chain
 Well known players have faced Restructuring, bankruptcy amid fierce competition with the online players

 Diversifying the supplier base with huge numbers of partners has facilitated the increase in product portfolios
and in creating a symbiotic relationship with suppliers by providing them with an unimaginable customer
base.

 Minimising delivery time with maximising productivity in the logistics network.

 Partnering with major logistics express players like DHL, FEDEX etc.

 Some new initiative of optimising delivery time is to be able to deliver at any time of the day even in the
absence of the customer. Amazon & Walmart are piloting a service that would allow entry of delivery drivers
to customer homes via passcode and a smart lock.

 The postal operators transformed into commercial independent actors, and some postal operations riding the
e‑commerce wave offering services akin to couriers.
Challenges in E-commerce Supply Chain
 The Logistics environment & its interaction with E-commerce is intense having dynamic complexity due its tight
coupling, Non-linear cause and effect, extraneous factors etc.

 Small businesses not being able to bear the uncertainties & costs of cross-border e-commerce.

 Unfavourable government policies like price regulations & anti-predatory laws can adversely affect the E-
commerce supply chain.

 Damages in transit. One of the major criticisms faced by the E-commerce companies

 Wrong order being delivered. Errors due to documentation & processing

 Surge orders and being able to deliver on time

 Unavailability of customers at the time of delivery
