Notes Electromagnets

This document provides information about electromagnets for a science class. It includes bell work questions about magnetic poles and different types of magnets. The essential questions are about the components of electromagnets and how to vary their strength. Students will demonstrate their understanding by designing a simple electromagnet. The document describes that an electromagnet consists of a solenoid wrapped around an iron core attached to a source of electricity. It explains how varying the electrical current or number of coils can change the strength of an electromagnet. Examples are given of how electromagnets are used including in cranes, trains, weapons and MRI machines.

1.What are magnetic poles?

2. Which poles attract each other; which repel?

3.Where is the magnetic south pole located on earth?

4.What is the difference between a permanent magnet and

a temporary magnet?

Tennessee SPI Objective:
Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet.

Essential Question(s)
1) What are the components of electromagnets?
2) How do I vary the strength of an electromagnet?

I Can Statement
I can describe how to build an electromagnet.
Success Criteria
I can prove that I understand this topic by designing a
simple electromagnet.
Electromagnets
An electromagnet consists of a solenoid wrapped around
an iron core attached to a source of electricity

F.Y.I. -Electric current in the wire produces a magnetic field

which lines up atoms in the domains of the iron core forming
an electromagnet.

Notes Electromagnets Science
F.Y.I: Why Are Some Substances Magnetic?
All atoms have magnetic fields with north and south poles
Atoms in objects are found in areas called domains.
If the north and south poles in a domain line up, this makes the
object magnetic. If they don’t line up, the object is not magnetic.

Electromagnets can be turned on and off as needed

You can adjust the strength of an electromagnet two ways

1) Increase the electrical current 2) Increase the number of coils
Electromagnets: Three Main Components
(1) Solenoid (2) Iron Core (3) Source of Electricity
Identify the 3 Components

How do we use electromagnets?
Commonly found in electrical motors and switches
Also used to…
To lift objects
Example: Junkyard crane-magnets
Example: Maglev trains
To propel objects
Example: Railguns as weapons
Example: Magnetic catapults (launch platforms)
To look inside of people
Example: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
