Reactions of Metals With Oxygen

Metals react with oxygen by forming metal oxides. All metals react following the general reaction of metal + oxygen → metal oxide. Iron and magnesium were discussed as examples. When iron reacts rapidly with oxygen it forms iron (II) oxide or iron (III) oxide. The reaction of magnesium with oxygen forms magnesium oxide. Rust is the slow reaction of iron with oxygen in the presence of water, causing iron to corrode and break down over time on the metal's surface. Ways to prevent rust include painting, using oils/greases, galvanizing, and electroplating the metal.

“The world of chemical reactions is like a
stage, on which scene after scene is
ceaselessly played. The actors on it are the
elements. ”

— Clemens Winkler
Introduction
In order to understand this section of the work, please
consult a periodic table again and remind yourself where
to find the metals and non-metals again.

★ Metals are usually solids while non-metals can be in any of the states of
matter (solid, liquid, gas)
★ Their properties are different from each other and they have different uses.
★ These different types of elements also react differently with different
substances such as oxygen.

Corrosion

Rust is an example of corrosion.

It is the slow reaction of iron with

oxygen, in the presence of
water/moisture, on the surface of the
metal causing it to break down or
wear away.
