HDS Prathamesh

The document discusses holographic data storage, which uses holograms to store large volumes of data in 3D. Some key advantages are storage capacities of 1TB, quick data retrieval, and durability over 50 years. Challenges include complex design leading to high costs, slower retrieval versus SSDs, and lack of standardization. The document outlines the working, applications, graphical representation, and challenges of holographic data storage technology.

INTRODUCTION
o What is Holographic Data Storage?

Holographic Data Storage is a high information storage volume

technology that empowers information storage by making holographic
pictures of every data instance on a bolstered medium. It depends on the
comparable idea of optical storage gadgets however it empowers the
utilization of a single storage volume to store a lot of information. It I also

known as Three Dimensional(3D) storage.

STORAGE

o Holographic memory offers a storage volume of around 1TB.

o Data pursuit is additionally quicker in Holographic memory.

o Protection from damage if a few pieces of the medium are damaged, all data can still be
acquired from other parts.

o Hologrpahic media is very durable as it can be accessed after 50 years also.

o It gives access to data quickly as compared to traditional magnetic drives.

STORAGE

o Design of Hologrpahic storages is very complex. This complexity can lead

to higher manufacturing costs.

o The data retrieval speed is slower as compared to SSD’s or traditional hard

drives.

o Holographic storage lacks standardized formats and protocols.

o Some materials used in holographic storage can be sensitive to

environmental conditions like temperature and humidity. Eg. Photopolymer
materials.

I. Blue-green argon laser is fired, and with the help of the beam splitter, the
laser beam is split into two beams known as the signal beam, which travels
straight ahead, and the reference beam, which is directed through the side of
the beam splitter.

II. Signal beam is bounced off a mirror and it travels through the LCD to the
lithium-niobate crystal.

III. Reference beam approaches the crystal from a different path.

IV. When the two beams meet, the data is stored in a hologram.

o Reconstruction Beam: To retrieve data, a reference beam is sent

into the storage medium at the same angle or wavelength used
during recording.

o Reconstruction Interference: The reference beam reconstructs

the stored holograms as it passes through the storage medium.

o Data Extraction: The reconstructed data pattern is captured by a

photosensitive sensor or detector.

I. Cross-Talk and Interference: When multiple holograms are stored
in the same volume, they can interfere with each other during
data retrieval, leading to data quality degradation.

II. Data Retrieval Speed: Reading out multiple holograms from the
storage medium can be time-consuming.

III. Cost: HDS systems can be expensive to develop and manufacture,

which can limit their commercial viability.

IV. Data Security: Ensuring the security of data stored in a

Holographic format is essential.
