DESIGN AND MAKE OF A COST EFFECTIVE

AUTOMATED PERITONEAL PORTABLE DIALYSIS

(APPD) MACHINE: CASE FOR PARIRENYATWA
HOSIPITAL

THIRD YEAR PROJECT BY: NICOLA KITUMETSI CHIWARE

SUPERVISOR: MR J MADHOMBIRO
CO-SUPERVISOR: DR ENG. TAWANDA MUSHIRI
PROJECT BACKGROUND
• Peritoneal dialysis is an artificial way of removing excess
water and metabolic waste from the body when the kidneys
fail to function as intended.
• It is divided into two main types, Continuous Ambulatory
Peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) which allows fluid exchange due
to gravity; and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis
• The automated aspect of the peritoneal dialysis process,
involves the use of a machine to actively pump in dialysate
and pump out filtered waste.
• This process of dialysis is slightly different from the
Haemodialysis because it occurs in the abdominal cavity,
where the dialysate is pumped into the peritoneum.
• The abdominal wall lining acts as a filter and removes waste
products from the human body
• After a set period of time, fluid containing the filtered out
waste is drained out of the peritoneal cavity using the drain
line.

Problem Statement

• In Zimbabwe, due to the expensiveness of haemodialysis for an average Zimbabwean citizen, coupled
with the long waiting list for kidney transplant patients, with no guarantee of getting a matching kidney
on time; there is urgent need for a safe alternative that can function as an artificial kidney
Aim and Objectives
• AIM
• To locally manufacture and produce our own portable automated peritoneal dialysis machine

• OBJECTIVES
• To design and make cost effective APPD machine costing between US$3500 and US$4000
• The machine should be manufactured using local available materials
• The machine should be user friendly, with an illustrations manual that can easily be understood by
anyone
