Depression
• Childhood depression is persistent sadness. When it occurs, the child feels alone,
hopeless, helpless, and worthless.

• When this type of sadness is unending, it disrupts every part of the child's life. It
interferes with the child's daily activities, schoolwork, and peer relationships

• CAUSES FOR CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION


The causes of childhood depression are unknown. It could be caused by any
combination of factors that relate to;
• Physical health,
• Life events,
• family history ( parental divorce, family tension, poor relation with parents,
siblings etc)
• Environment ( undesirable family environment)
• Genetic vulnerability, and
• Biochemical disturbance.
Depression
• The signs and symptoms of  Physical complaints (such as
childhood depression include: stomachaches or headaches )
Changes in appetite -- either that do not respond to
increased appetite or decreased treatment
Changes in sleep --
sleeplessness or excessive sleep  Reduced ability to function
Continuous feelings of sadness during events and activities at
or hopelessness home or with friends, in school
Difficulty concentrating or during extracurricular
Fatigue and low energy activities, or when involved with
Feelings of worthlessness or hobbies or other interests
guilt  Social withdrawal
Impaired thinking or
 Thoughts of death or suicide

Increased sensitivity to rejection  Vocal outbursts or crying

Treatment
• Anti-depressant drugs- tricyclic
• Interpersonal therapy
• Cognitive therapy
• Social support
Autistic Disorder
• Autistic disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that
usually appears during the first 3 years of life

• Child with autism appears to live in his / her own world, showing little
interest in others, and a lack of social awareness

• Autistic disorder is very common in male child


Autistic Disorder
SYMPTOMS
• Social interaction
• Does not socially interact well with others including parents
• Show lack of interest in physical contact – unaffectionate
• Avoid making eye contact with others
• Fails to develop friends or interact with other children
Communication
• Not communicated well with others
• Delayed in language develop
• Does not use language to communication
• Repeats words or phrases repeatedly
Autistic Disorder
SYMPTOMS
• Stereotypy
• Demonstrates repetitive behaviour
• Repetitive motor movements
• Preoccupied, usually with lights, moving objects or parts of objects
• Does not like noise
• Has rituals
• Required routines
Autistic Disorder
Treatment
• Behavior therapy
• Teach social skills, motor skills and cognitive skills
• Parent counseling
• Social skills training
• Individual therapy
• Special education programs – develop social skills, speech,
language, self care and job skills
Mental Retardation (MR)
• MR means a development delay in the brain function.
• There is limitation in intellectual and adaptive function
• MR is a functional disability due to slow or impaired function of the brain
• Initial diagnoses of mental retardation occur very frequently at age 5 to 6
years peak at age 15.
Diagnosed level of MR Corresponding IQ range

Mild retardation 50 -39

Moderate retardation 35 to 49

Sever retardation 20 to 34

Profound retardation Below 20

• Infection during Pregnancy- Rubella, Syphilis, AIDS

• Phenylketonuria
• Treatment
• Proper care
• Identify unique talents
• Social support and family support
• Controlling systemic infection
• Proper training – required to learn the activities of daily living
