1. Control
Communication functions to control
behaviour. Every organization has its regulations
which are communicated to all members in
various ways.

Example:
A small organization such as family has its house rules
which every member has to follow.
The school implements rules which students and other
members of the school community are obliged to follow.
The dress code in a business organization serves to
dictate the style dressing among its members,
particularly the employees.
2. Social Interaction
Communication allows individuals to
interact with others. Because of the needs to
interact daily, people communicate.

Example:
A student has to talk with his parents regarding his
allowance and school requirements.
John has to talk to the driver of a jeepney or bus, or to
the train ticketing clerk.
In school, it is inevitable for Paul not to converse with his
teachers, classmates and schoolmates.

Communication motivates or
encourages people to live better. Motivation is
either internal or external.

Example:
A student is motivated to study hard because of his
desire to graduate with honors.
A student is motivated to study hard because of his
father's promise to give him an expensive car once he
graduates with honors.
4. Emotional Expression
Communication facilitates people's
expression of their feelings and emotions.

Example:
As Jonah informs his loved ones, he may show fear
because their house is not a safe place to stay when
there is an emergency like a typhoon.
Angela may show love or concern as she informs them
for them to get ready for the calamity.
Dave may show joy and excitement as he envisions
another day of no classes or a grand vacation.
5. Information Dissemination
Communication functions to convey
information. It provides data and information for
effective completion of tasks, solution and
problems, and elimination of uncertainty.

Example:
A new policy to be implemented in school has to be
made known to all members before its implementation.
The leader draws plans for executing the safety
protocols.
A student leader talks about how to help fellow
members who are in need of financial assistance.

1. Extempore Speeches
Extempore speeches prove to be a great
activity for oral communication. It is an impromptu
speech that is done without any prior preparation.
The individual has to conduct the speech then and
there. The individual is asked to speak at the spur of
the moment.

2. Group Discussion
Group discussions are another effective activity
for oral communication. A group discussion is a
communicative situation that is centered around a
set agenda.

3. Role Play
A very effective activity for oral communication
is role play. It is a pretend play or make believe
situation that is at times structured or semi
structured. The individual is asked to play as any
specific person or take the role of that person
based on his prominent traits and the feelings the
person associates to that role.

4. Talk Shows
Talk shows are another efficient strategy to
improve communication skills among individuals.
The structured and semi structured talk shows are
centered around building strong oral communication
skills among the individuals.

5. Short Presentations
Short presentations are another activity to
enhance oral communication skills among
individuals. The short presentations are on flash
cards or through multimedia. They could be in
groups or in small teams. The individuals have to
organize their ideas before they give a short
presentation.
