GULAYAN SA PAARALAN PROGRAM
RATIONALE
• During our childhood days, one of the directives we’ve always heard from our parents is to "eat
your vegetables” because according to them, vegetables make us healthy and strong.
• Vegetables are defined as edible herbaceous plants/plant parts consumed as raw or after
cooking and rich in vitamins, mineral, and low in calorific value that’s why these contribute
vitally to the general well-being of people.
• The medical experts all over the world encourage us to add more veggies to our diet per day.
They recommended to consume nine (9) servings of vegetables each day as we get many
specific chemical substances needed by our body for growth, reproduction and for maintenance
of health.
• Also, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests consuming more than 400 grams of
fruits and vegetables per day to improve overall health and reduce the risk of certain
noncommunicable diseases.
• The above citations are enough to make us exactly realized why vegetables are so important
to human health.

2
GULAYAN SA PAARALAN PROGRAM
RATIONALE
• However, the current situation is somewhat contradicted, with the proliferation of modernization, one
of the affected is our eating habits. We are always rely on instant foods and fast-foods that are packed
with preservatives and additives.
• These are the conditions that the youth today are adopted, resulting to malnutrition and manifestation of
various metabolic diseases at an early age. Record shows that two leading diseases that cause of death
of people are heart attack and cancer that linked to poor eating habit.
• As response of the government, the Department of Agriculture (DA) conceptualized a project that would
directly teach the youth not only the importance of producing vegetables but also the health benefits
of consuming it.
• That’s the birth of Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP).
• It is also inclined with the goal of the Department to attain food self-reliance and self-sufficiency, to
empower the constituents by enhancing their capability to produce their own food through adoption of
various technologies on food production and on vegetable growing.
