Who is Lionel Messi?


Lionel Messi is a football (soccer) player born in Argentina on June 24, 1987. During the
2004–05 season, when he made his official debut with FC Barcelona, he quickly established
himself as one of the game's most powerful players, recognized for his frequent goal scoring
and skillful ball control. After 17 years at Barcelona, Messi has an impressive trophy
collection that is dominated by Spanish football. Messi has won a club-record 35 major
trophies with Barcelona, including 10 La Liga championships, four Champions Leagues, seven
Copa del Rey crowns, seven Spanish Super Cups and more. Messi has One world cup, and
seven Ballon d'Or awards. Although he doesn't think of himself as the finest, he is
undoubtedly the Best of All Time.

Messi holds the record for most goals in La Liga (474), the Supercopa de España (14), the UEFA Super Cup (3) and is
the player with the most official recorded assists in football history (325). Messi has a Spanish football-dominated
trophy cabinet after 17 years at Barcelona, and won a club-record 34 major trophies with Barcelona, including 10 La
Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, seven Copa del Rey titles, seven Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and
three FIFA Club World Cups. Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all
time, has received seven Ballon d'Or awards, the most for any football player, as well as the 2009 FIFA World Player of
the Year and 2019 The Best FIFA Men's Player is the winner of the FIFA The Best 2022 award for the best player of the
year playing in PSG.

International Achievements
With his country, he won the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Since then, Messi has scored 98 goals
in 172 international appearances, making him the country's all-time top scorer; he surpassed Gabriel Batistuta's
record of 54 goals with a free kick against the United States in the semi-final of the Copa América Centenario on 21
June 2016.

Messi's Childhood
Lionel Messi was born, 24 June 1987, in Rosario, Argentina to a working-class family. His father was a factory steel worker, and his
mother a cleaner. He began playing from an early age, and his talent was soon apparent. However, at the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed
with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). This was a condition that stunted growth and required expensive medical treatment, including
the use of the drug Human growth hormone.His local club, River Plate were interested in signing Messi but didn’t want to pay for his
medical treatment. However, Messi was given a trial with Barcelona, and coach Carles Rexach was impressed – offering Messi a contract
which included paying for Messi’s treatment in Spain. Messi moved to Barcelona with his father and became part of the prestigious FC
Barcelona youth academy.

Messi rose through the ranks and arrived in the league in the 2004–05 season, when he became the league's youngest goal-scorer. Messi
was a player of the 2006 double-winning side that captured the Champions League and La Liga (Spanish League). Messi was the starting
striker for Barcelona the following season (2006–07) at the age of just 20. He scored 14 goals in 26 league games during that time. Messi
tied Ronaldo's record for Barcelona with 47 goals in all competitions during the 2009–10 season. Messi continued to advance and set
records as the seasons went on. He smashed the previous world record for the most goals scored in a calendar year in 2012, setting a
new mark.

In his career Messi spent 21 years with FC Barcelona, but has now embarked on a new chapter at French club Paris
Saint-Germain. At Barca he won multiple trophies including Spain's La Liga title ten times and the Uefa Champions
League four times. He won his seventh Ballon d'Or award in 2021. For the unversed, Messi's overall tally (758) takes him
to the second spot in the list of most career goals in professional football. He has 678 club goals to his name (majorly for
Barcelona) and has scored a total of 80 goals for his country.

International
For Argentina Messi has a record 158 caps for his country in which he has scored 80 goals. Argentina won the 2021 Copa
America with Messi the top goalscorer in the competition. After winning a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics the
Copa America triumph in 2021 was Messi’s first in senior international football.
