Subject- Verb Agreement
A verb should agree with its subject in
number.
Here are the Rules in Subject-Verb
Agreement that you need to remember.
1. Singular nouns, even those ending in –s,
require singular form of the verb.
Examples:
The news was too good to be true.
Politics in the country is dirty
2. When two or more singular subjects are
joined by and, the plural form of the verb is
used.
Examples:
Matthew and John are identical twins.
The president and the secretary lead the
discussion.
3. Compound subjects connected by or or
nor require a verb that agrees in number
with the nearest subject.
Examples:
1.Two slices of bread or a cup of rice is
enough.
2.Neither a pony ride nor turns at the
shooting game excite young Polly.
4. The pronouns you and I always require
the plural form of the verb.
Examples:
You make me feel uneasy.
I serve food and drinks to guests almost
everyday.
5. A singular subject followed by as well as, including
with, together with, in addition to, or any similar
intervening word or phrase takes a singular verb.
Examples:
The teacher, as well as her students, participates in the
campaign.
The man,together with his children, arrives from Cebu.
Practice: Underline the correct form of the verb.
1. A pair of pants or two blouses( is, are) what I can buy
with my budget.
2. Melissa, together with Anton, (donate, donates) money
for the foundation.
3. You (handle, handles) the class very well.
4. Economics ( is , are) not a very difficult subject.
5. Neither Aunt May nor her daughters ( is , are) trapped
inside the house.
6. The indefinite pronouns another, anybody,
anyone, anything, each, either, everybody, everyone,
everything, neither, no one, nobody, nothing, one,
somebody, someone, and something take the
singular form of the verb.
Examples:
Each member of the men’s basketball team has
his own strengths.
No one makes waffles like you do, Mother.
7. The indefinite pronouns both , few,
many, and several take the plural form of
the verb.
Examples:
Both have means to accomplish their
tasks.
Very few gain access to the department`s
classified documents.
8. The indefinite pronouns all, more , most, any, none,
and some are sometimes singular or plural.
They take the singular form of the verb when they
refer to singular noun, and the plural form when they
refer to a plural noun.
Examples:
Some of the milk was spilled. ( Milk is singular)
Some of the chairs are broken. ( Chairs is plural)
9. Collective nouns may take either a singular or a plural
form of the verb, depending on the meaning of the sentence
in which they are used. They take a singular form of the verb
when they act in a collective fashion or represent one group.
They take a plural verb when they represent individual
members of one group.
Examples:
The couple is on vacation. ( Collective)
The couple are in a disagreement. ( Individual members)
Practice
1. All of the liquid (has been spilled, have been spilled) on
the floor.
2. Both ( has ,have) two babies.
3. Everybody (was, were) informed not to cross the newly
constructed bridge yet.
4. The committee ( has, have ) made a decision. (individual
members)
5. More of those apples ( is, are ) being delivered
10. Subjects that indicate fractions, percentages, or
portions can also be singular or plural depending on what
they are referring to. If the reference is an uncountable
noun, a collective noun, or a singular countable noun, a
singular verb is used.
Examples:
Half of the oil was used.
Half of the lamps were used.
3. Three- fourths of the audience was injured in the
commotion.
4. Three-fourths of the spectators were injured in the
commotion.
5. One fifth of the fruit is rotten.
6. One fifth of the fruits are rotten.
Three-fourths of the audience was injured in the
commotion.
Three-fourths of the spectators were injured in
the commotion.
One –fifth of the fruit is rotten.
One -fifth of the fruits are rotten
11. The expression “ more than one” takes the
singular form of the verb.
Examples:
More than one student has questioned the
new policy.
More than one pellet was stuck in the barrel.
12. In an inverted sentence( wherein the verb
comes before the subject), the verb must agree
with the subject that follows it.
Examples:
In that shed live four women.
Unscathed by the monsters was the brave
young boy.
13. Sentences that begin with here or there
are also inverted. Again, the verb agrees
with the subject that follows it.
Examples:
There goes our hard –earned money.

Practice: Underline the correct form of the verb.
1. There (is, are) your plants.
2. The bottom part of the tree ( was, were) not
decorated on purpose.
3. Along ( comes, come) a spider.
4. More than one word ( is, are) printed on the shirt.
5. Fifty percent of the herd ( graze, grazes) on those
hills.
14. The verb that follows the relative pronouns who,
that, or which agrees with noun before the relative
pronoun.
Examples:
He is among the employees who work overtime every
week.
Liza is our only student who has achieved national
recognition.
15. The expression “the number” takes the
singular form of the verb, while a “number” takes
the plural form of the verb.
Examples:
A number of Filipinos are living below poverty
line.
The number of dengue victims increases every
hour.
16. Subjects that state amount of time,
money, weight, and volume take the singular
form of the verb.
Examples:
Two hundred meters is too much distance
for a toddler to walk.
Three kilos is enough.
17. A verb agrees with its subject, not with the
predicate nominative.
Examples:
Traffic violations are now a major concern.
