A seashell or sea shell, also known simply
as a shell, is a hard, protective outer layer
usually created by an animal or organism
Key words
that lives in the sea. The shell is part of the
body of the animal. Empty seashells are
often found washed up on beaches by
beachcombers.
KIND OF SEASHELL
For Seashell craft purposes, there are two general kinds of
seashell:

The Plain Seashell is the more common and simple kind. It


comes in either white or pastel. Its size varies from large to
medium to small.

Seashell white design may either be able to grooved


elongated, or corrugated, design are usually abstract, and
colors are bright and attractive. Like plain seashell, with
design vary in size and shape.
FOUR MAIN CATEGORIES OF SEASHELL
1. Ornamental Shells - these are shells that are
exploited for their whole decorative value, used
as souvenir items and decorations. They are
relatively cheap and plentiful in the trade.
2. Rare Shells - these are shells sometimes
endemic species of mollusks that are usually
found in the deep seas.
3. Commercial Shells - these are mollusks that
are harvested for their nacre or mother pearl.
4. Shell Craft/Handicraft - refers to the product
made by shells or in combination with other
native raw materials, they are usually hand
crafted by skilled individuals.
Shell crafts are found throughout the world,
have played an important part in the history
of art and have been particularly popular in
some primitive cultures. Examples are most
often seen in folk and popular art and as
souvenirs produced for the tourist trade.
Crafts utilising shells have been practiced in
the Philippines for centuries. Archaeological
examples of shells used as implements have
been found. Ethno-linguistic groups such as
those of the Cordillera Mountains of Northern
Luzon have traditionally prized shells for their
luster and smoothness, incorporating them in
body adornments.
A Roman Catholic church in Bacolod City
on the island of Negros is famous for a
mosaic image of the Virgin Mary
assembled from pieces of shell. An older
church in the town of Guian on the island
of Samar has walls festooned with
elaborate patterns made from whole
shells.
celebrated shellcraft of the Philippines utilizes
the flat opalescent shell of a bivalve mollusk
known as capiz. The thin translucent shells
were individually squared and then set like
glass panes into wooden lattice frames to be
used as window shutters. This is a unique
feature of Philippine architecture from the
Spanish colonial period. These windows only
occur extensively in the Philippines and in
Goa in India.
