Passive Voice
• form: to be + past participle (-ed, III column)

• it‘s used when the focus is on the action(се користи


кога фокусот е на самото дејство )
• it‘s not important who or what is performing the action,
but the action itself is important(не е важно кој го
врши дејството ,туку самото дејство е важно )
 The streets are cleaned.
 Coffee is grown in Brazil.
 My bicycle was stolen last night.
Passive Voice
• statement
 Everyone is invited.

• negative
 Some people are not (aren’t) invited.

• question
 Is everyone invited?
• when rewriting active sentences in passive, the object of the
active sentence becomes the subject of the passive (Кога ги
трансформираме речениците од активни во
пасивни,предметот од активната реченица станува
подмет во пасивната)
 A: Somebody cleans this room every day.
OBJECT (предмет )
 Во активната реченица подметот е вршител на дејството-
the subject is the doer of the action in active sentences )
 P: This room is cleaned every day.
SUBJECT (подмет )
In Passive sentences the subject is the recipient of the action
–во пасивните реченици подметот е примател на
дејството ,врз него се врши дејството )
Passive Voice
• the verb BE has to be in the same tense as in active
sentence (глаголот сум во пасивната реченица
треба да е во исто време како главниот глагол
од активната )
 A: Someone stole my sister’s bike yesterday.
 P: My sister’s bike was stolen yesterday.
 stole – past simple => BE = was/were
• to show who did the action, we use BY (ако сакаме
да кажеме кој го врши дејството додаваме by
)
 This house was built by my grandfather.
Passive Voice
• to show who did the action, we use BY
 This house was built by my grandfather.
I => me she => her
you => you he => him
we => us they => them
 I opened the door. => The door was opened by
me.
 She cleans the room.=> The room is cleaned
by her.
Passive Voice

• if you are not sure how to form a passive


sentence, think of the active sentence first

 A: Someone stole my sister’s bike yesterday.


 P: My sister’s bike was stolen yesterday.
Passive Voice – present simple
• form: am/is/are (not)+ past participle

 The grandma is always invited.


 Many accidents are caused by dangerous
driving.
 I’m not invited to parties.
 How many people are injured in car accidents
every year?
Passive Voice – past simple
• form: was/were (not) + past participle

 This room was cleaned.


 During the night we were woken up by a loud
explosion.
 When was the castle built?
 This house wasn’t damaged in the storm.
Passive voice –Present Continuous
• Form : am /is /are(not ) + being + past
participle
• My car is being repaired .
• The mail is being delivered by the postman.
• Trees are being planted by her.
