LEC 2 Beam Design

This document contains sample problems related to the design of reinforced concrete beams. Problem 1 involves calculating properties such as balanced steel area and maximum steel area for a given beam. Problem 2 asks for the required tension steel area. Problem 3 determines design strength for different steel reinforcement configurations. The remaining problems involve calculating properties like moment capacity, required steel area, and design strength for various beam designs.

PRINCIPLES OF

REINFORCED CONCRETE
DESIGN
(Chapter 2 – Beam Design)

-Engr. Eunice R. Berina

PROBLEM 1
A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 310mm and an effective
depth of 490mm. fc’ = 30MPa, fy = 415MPa. Determine the
following.
a. The balanced steel area
b.The maximum steel area if the beam is singly reinforced
condition.
c. The maximum design strength if the beam is SRB.
d.The required steel area if the beam is subjected to M of 120kN-m
DL

and M of 170kN-m.
LL
PROBLEM 2
Given the following data for a rectangular beam: width, b = 320mm,
effective depth, d = 520mm, fc’ = 27MPa, fy = 345MPa, MDL = 180
kN-m, MLL = 167kN-m. Determine the required tension steel area.
PROBLEM 3
Given the following properties of a rectangular beam: b = 280mm, d
= 480mm, fc’ = 21MPa, fy = 415 Mpa. The beam is reinforced for
tension only. Determine the design strength under the following
condition.
a. When the beam is reinforced with three 25 mm diameter bars.
b.When the beam is reinforced with four 25 mm diameter bars.
c. When the beam is reinforced with seven 25 mm diameter bars.
PROBLEM 4
A rectangular concrete beam has a width of 350mm and an effective
depth of 650mm. It is reinforced with 5-28mmø for tension only.
Concrete strength is 24 MPa and steel yield strength is 300MPa.
a. What is the depth of rectangular compression stress block?
b.What is the distance from neutral axis from the extreme compression
fiber of concrete?
c. What is the ultimate moment capacity of the beam?
PROBLEM 1
Calculate the ultimate moment capacity if a rectangular beam with b=
350mm, d = 540mm, As = 5-25mm, Assume fc’ =24MPA, fy = 345 Mpa.
Use NSCP 2015.
PROBLEM 2
Calculate the ultimate moment capacity if a rectangular beam with b=
350mm, d = 540mm, As = 7-28mm, Assume fc’ =24MPa, fy = 345 Mpa.
Use NSCP 2015.
PROBLEM 3
Calculate the ultimate moment capacity if a rectangular beam with b=
300mm, d = 500mm, As = 9-28mm, Assume fc’ =34MPa, fy = 414
Mpa. Use NSCP 2015.
PROBLEM 4
A rectangular beam has b = 250 mm, d = 330 mm, fy = 414 Mpa, fc’ =
20.7 Mpa. Determine the following
a) A maximum design moment if the beam is singly reinforced
b) The required steel area if the beam is required to carry a dead load
moment of 50kN-m and live load moment of 30kN-m.Use NSCP 2015.
PROBLEM 5
Design a rectangular beam reinforced for tension only to carry dead load
moment of 85kN-m (including its estimated weight) and a live load of
102kN-m. Use d = 1.75b. Assume fy = 276MPa and fc’ 28MPa. Use 2015.
PROBLEM 5
A rectangular beam has the following properties:
B = 400mm d = 620 mm fy = 415 MPa fc’ = 22MPa
Tension bars = 10 - 28mm
Compression bar = 3 – 25mm
d’ = 70 mm
Determine the design strength of the beam.
PROBLEM 6
A rectangular beam has b = 300mm and d = 490 mm. Comcrete
compression strength fc’ = 27.6 Mpa and steel yield strength fy = 276
Mpa. Compression steel if required shall have its centroid 60mm from
extreme concrete fiber. Calculate the required tension steel area if the
factored moment Mu is 620kN-m
