Typhoon

The document discusses tropical cyclones and typhoons in the Philippines. It provides information on several key points: 1) About 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) each year, which is the area that PAGASA monitors for weather occurrences. 2) The Philippines is prone to typhoons due to its geographical location surrounded by bodies of water, as tropical cyclones form over warm ocean waters above 26.5°C. 3) Tropical cyclones are classified based on wind speed, from a tropical depression (below 61 km/hr), to tropical storm, severe tropical storm, typhoon, and super typhoon (above 220 km/hr). Proper preparations before

What do you see

on the image?
According to the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical,
and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA),
about 20 tropical cyclones
enter the Philippine Area of
Responsibility each year.
Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR)
What is PAR?
The Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR) is an area in
the Northwestern Pacific where
PAGASA, the countries meteorological
agency, monitors weather occurrences.
If the typhoon enters the PAR, it
means the bad weather is already
within the perimeter of the region.
Let’s have an activity to know
the boundaries of PAR.
Direction: Remember the
landmasses and bodies of water
that surrounds the Philippines?
Identify them by filling the missing
letters. Then, plot the following
coordinates (latitude,longitude) on
the map (Figure 1) and connect
the plotted points. 5°N, 135°E has
been done for you. Answer in a
graphing paper.

• 5°N, 115°E
• 15°N, 115°E
• 21°N, 120°E
• 25°N, 120°E
• 25°N, 135°E
Why is the Philippines
prone to typhoons?
Philippines is prone to tropical cyclone
because of:
Geographical Locations
- it is surrounded by bodies of
water. (Pacific Ocean, West
Philippine Sea)
Tropical Cyclone (Bagyo)
are warm-core low pressure
systems associated with a spiral
inflow of mass at the bottom level
and spiral outflow at the top level.
They always form over oceans
where sea surface temperature,
also air temperatures are greater
than 26.5°C.
Tropical Cyclone (Bagyo)
are systems of thunderstorms
characterized by strong winds and
heavy rains.
Parts of the Typhoon
Eye – typhoon’s center with mostly calm weather
Eyewall – the most dangerous and destructive part
Inner Rainbands – spiral band located outside
the eyewall
Outer Rainbands
– rainbands that
occur outside
the inner core
What conditions favor
the formation of
typhoons?
Conditions for a Tropical
Cyclone to form:
1. Warm water
2. Water vapor
NOTE:
Tropical cyclones can only form over
oceans of the world except in the South
Atlantic Ocean and the south eastern
Pacific where a tropical cyclone could
never be formed due to the cooler sea
surface temperature and higher vertical
wind shears. It’s called hurricane when
they develop in North Atlantic, central
and eastern North Pacific, cyclone in
South Pacific and Indian Ocean and
typhoon in Northwest Pacific.
Tropical cyclones are
classified according to its
WINDSPEED.
Categories of a Tropical Cyclone:
TROPICAL DEPRESSION (TD) - a tropical cyclone with
maximum sustained winds of up to 61 kilometers per
hour (kph) or less than 34 nautical miles per hour (knots) .
TROPICAL STORM (TS) - a tropical cyclone with maximum
wind speed of 62 to 88 kph or 34 - 47 knots.
SEVERE TROPICAL STORM (STS) - a tropical cyclone with
maximum wind speed of 89 to 117 kph or 48 - 63 knots.
TYPHOON (TY) - a tropical cyclone with maximum wind
speed of 118 to 220 kph or 64 - 99 knots.
SUPER TYPHOON (STY) - a tropical cyclone with
maximum wind speed of more than 220 kph
Before
Prepare an emergency kit.
Make an emergency plan with your family.
Store enough supplies of food and potable water.
Keep yourself updated by listening, watching, or reading latest
weather forecasts.
During
Stay together as much as possible and have time for prayer.
Close the windows, doors, and the main valve of the LPG tank.
Boil the water for at least 20 minutes if potable water is unavailable.
After
Check every family member. Someone might need first aid.
Report immediately to the authorities any fallen electric posts with
damaged electrical cables.
Remove water that has accumulated in tires, cans, or any container
which can be favorable breeding place for mosquitoes.
Direction: Read the statements below and indicate which should be done Before (B),
During (D), or After (A) a typhoon. The first one has been done for you. After
identifying, let the students choose one from their answers for Before, During and
After and have them present it in front of the class. They can present it in their
preferred way, e.g. role play, literary, song, dance, and/or graphic organizer.

word or phrase to make the statement correct.
1. Tropical cyclones are classified according to their wind
speed.
