Moon Theory

The document presents evidence for and against the moon collision theory. It provides four points of evidence that support the theory, including that the moon's composition matches Earth's mantle and lacks volatile compounds. However, it also lists two contradicting pieces of evidence, such as the moon containing heavier chlorine than Earth and only slightly more heavy oxygen isotopes than predicted. The document examines evidence from multiple sources on both sides of the moon formation debate.

Support
Evidence
● A large portion of the Lunar crust is made up of
Anorthosite, which is indicative of a large melting
event
● Moon is made of material that looks more like rock
from Earth's mantle than like the overall composition
of Earth
● Moon's composition of certain isotopes exactly
matches that of Earth, but it doesn't match those of
bodies from elsewhere
● in the solar system
● Moon's lack of water and lightweight volatile
compounds: The impact heated the debris to high
temperatures, and all volatiles turned to gas and
escaped into space.

Contradict
Evidence
• What they found is that the Moons rocks
contain a higher concentration of heavy
chlorine, whereas Earth rocks are richer
in light chlorine.
• If Theia was particularly enriched with
the heavier kind of oxygen atom, an
isotope called oxygen-17, then it might
make up less than 30 percent of the
moon but there are only about 12 parts
per million more of a heavier kind of
oxygen atom in the moon rocks
• The collision would have melted and
differentiated the Earth causing
geochemical signatures quite different to
those actually observed
