Dog surfing competition
There is a competition in California. This competition is for dogs. They surf. Dogs of
different kinds and sizes take part.
A dog from Hollywood is first. He is the best dog surfer. Last year, he won, too. He really loves
to surf.
You must know what your dog likes. Some dogs like surfing, some don’t. You cannot make a
dog surf. It must like it. Hundreds of people watch the competition. Some people dress their
dogs.

Difficult words:
competition (situation when you try to be better than others),
kind (type),
take part (to do an activity),
dress (put clothes on).

Saving Elephants
This news is about elephants. Around 28,000 elephants die every year.
A former soldier talks about poaching. She says that people call it
‘poaching’, but it is more like war. Somebody gives the poachers
arms, and somebody transports the ivory.

Kenyan rangers try to protect the elephants. They have a new


smartphone app. They can see important data. They can enter new
data, too.

The app helps them. Since 2016, fewer elephants die. The drop is by
11 per cent.

Difficult words: poaching (killing animals and selling their bodies),


arms (weapons), ivory (two of an elephant’s very big horns), ranger (a
keeper of a park; somebody who looks after the animals).

LEGO CITY
Timus Murtazin comes from Russia. He loves Lego. He opens a Lego museum near
Moscow.

Murtazin starts building Lego when he is 6 years old. He never stops. He builds a Lego
city. The city has 55 square meters. People can see it in the museum.

The city is very big. There are houses, streets, and stores. There are some unusual
things, too. There is a fire station, a roller coaster, and a train. The train goes around the
city.

Asya Borisova is Murtazin´s wife. She does not like Lego in the past. Murtazin shows her
that Lego is not only for children. Adults can build with it, too.

Lego will celebrate its 90th birthday next year. The company wants to open 120 new
stores worldwide.

Difficult words: roller coaster (a railway which goes up and down, and people enjoy a ride
on it), adult (a person who is not a child anymore), worldwide (all over the world).
