Introduction
The purpose of this project is to propose an idea of a truss bridge for the
bridge to be placed at Vietnam by creating a prototype of our idea where its
scale would be 1:150. This prototype should be in 2D type of truss bridge and
it will be tested in the lab to determine the efficiency of the truss. The
challenge for this project is to create a model that is lightweight but at the
same time strong enough to withstand more loads.
2. Conceiving Stage
Background research
Hochbrücke Brunsbüttel
● Longest bridge in Germany, over Kiel Canal at
the length of 2831m
● Location: East of Brunsbüttel, Part of Federal
Highway 5
● Description:
○ 4 Lanes
○ Top height: Around 44m
○ Crosses Kiel Canal at 58 degrees
● Type of Truss: Warren Truss
○ Simple
○ Load spread evenly across different
members
● Material: Steel
○ Common
Background research
C
Purpose: Prevent truss from moving under the application of external forces while keeping the truss
equilibrium to ensure stability
Types of Conditions
1. Balanced Loads
2. Properly restrained at its support locations
Stability of Structures
3. Unstable
○ No. of Unknown < No. of Equations
4. Stable & Determinate
○ No. of Unknown = No. of Equations
5. Indeterminate
○ No. of Unknown > No. of Equations
Truss system applicable to the model design
● A truss is a construction made up of parts arranged into
interconnected triangles, which causes the entire assembly
to behave as one object.

Overcoming difficulties
1. Poor alignments
-Had to redo and this time our group checked part by part before continuing
2. Gaps
-Gaps were found and we had to fill it up using tiny sticks.
-Even will precise measurements, gaps were still found due to human error
Additional
reinforcements below
5. Results and Conclusions
Test Results
What could have been improved
- Earlier and detailed planning
- More group discussions
- Workmanship
- Reduce the numbers of stick used per member
- Reduce the amount of members
- Ensure that all joints are equally secured
Conclusion
Overall, it was a good experience as the challenge provided us knowledge and
new abilities. We can now see how much work is necessary in order to create
a model that meets all requirements. By working closely together as a team,
we were able to get beyond whatever challenges we ran across. The biggest
challenge faced by our team was during the construction phase. The bridge
had to be changed during construction as a result of inadequate planning,
which extended the bridge's production time.
