UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE :
Emotional intelligence refer to the ability to
understand , manage and navigate one's own emotions
effectively , as well as the capacity to recognize ,
interpret and respond to the emotions of others in a
society adept way.
Acc. To psychologist - 'Daniel Goleman' :
''Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand
and manage your own emotions and those of the
people around you. ''
Mr Daniel Goleman also called the godfather of
emotional intelligence

TRAIT BASED MODEL OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
• The trait-based model of emotional intelligence
centers on inherent personality traits and
characteristics that contribute to emotional well-
being and social functioning. The trait-based
approach views emotional intelligence as a set of
stable qualities.
• Popularized by psychologists like Daniel Goleman,
this model identifies key traits such as self-
awareness, self-regulation , motivation , empathy ,
social skills etc.

TRAIT BASED MODEL OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:

• In this framework, individuals possess varying levels of these

traits, influencing how they navigate emotions and
interpersonal relationships. For instance, someone high in self-
awareness understands their emotions and how those emotions
impact their behavior. Self-regulation involves managing and
controlling one's emotional responses, contributing to emotional
stability.
• The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) is a
tool commonly used to measure these traits. This model implies
that understanding one's inherent emotional tendencies can aid
personal growth, fostering emotional resilience and more
effective social interactions based on individual predispositions.

TRAIT BASED MODEL GIVEN BY
PSYCHOLOGISTS PETER
SALOVEY AND JOHN MAYER :
• According to 'Salovey' and ' Mayer's' model , emotional
intelligence is comprised of four interrelated emotional abilities
or traits :
⮚ PERCEPTION OF EMOTIONS : This refers to the ability to
accurately perceive and recognize emotions in oneself and
others. People high in this trait can discern subtle emotional
cues, both verbal and non-verbal , in themselves and others.
⮚ USE OF EMOTIONS : This trait involves the ability to use
the emotions to facilitate thinking , problem-solving and
decision making. Individuals high in this trait can harness their
emotions to guide their thoughts and actions , using emotional
information effectively.

TRAIT BASED MODEL GIVEN
BY PSYCHOLOGISTS PETER SALOVEY AND
JOHN MAYER :
⮚ UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS: This trait pertains to
the ability to comprehend the complexity of emotions and
the ability to understand emotional information. People
high in this trait are empathetic and can understand the
emotional state of others , showing sensitivity to their
feelings.
⮚ MANAGEMENT OF EMOTIONS: This trait involves
the ability to manage and regulate one's own emotions
and to manage emotions in others. People high in this trait
can regulate their emotions in challenging situation ,
remain calm under pressure and handle interpersonal
relationships effectively.

TRAIT BASED MODEL GIVEN BY PSYCHOLOGISTS
PETER SALOVEY AND JOHN MAYER

❖These four traits are interrelated and work together to form

emotional intelligence. Individuals may vary in their level of each
trait , leading to different profiles of emotional intelligence
❖It's important to note that while the trait based model focuses on
specific emotional abilities , there are other models such as
''Ability based model'' proposed by Daniel Goleman , which
emphasizes competencies and skills related to emotional
intelligence

TRAIT BASED MODEL GIVEN BY DANIEL
GOLEMAN:
Goleman's model of emotional intelligence identifies five
key traits or components :
⮚ SELF AWARENESS: This involves recognizing and
understanding you own emotions , strengths , weakness ,
values and moivations.
⮚ SELF REGULATION : It refers to the ability to manage
and control your emotions , impulses , and behaviour .
This includes adaptability , conscientiousness , and the
ability to handle stress.
⮚ MOTIVATION : Having a strong drive and commitment
to achieving goals , even in the face of obstacles . This
involves pursuing goals with energy and persistence This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under

TRAIT BASED MODEL GIVEN
BY DANIEL GOLEMAN:

⮚ EMPATHY : The capacity to understand and consider others'

emotions , thoughts , and feelings. Empathy involves being able to
take on another person's perspective and respond
compassionately.
⮚ SOCIAL SKILLS : These encompass adeptness in managing
relationships , communicating effectively , resolving conflicts ,
and building networks. It involves abilities such as leadership ,
collaboration , and influence.
Goleman's model emphasizes that these traits can be developed and
improved over time through conscious efforts and practice ,
contributing to enhanced emotional intelligence and overall success
in various aspects of life , including personal relationships , career ,
and well being .

ABILITY BASED MODEL OF EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE:

An ability-based model is a framework for

evaluating an individual's capabilities and
proficiencies in specific domains. It views emotions
as a useful source of information that help one to
make sense of and navigate the social environment.
It focuses on assessing one's actual skills and
competencies , as opposed to measuring knowledge
or potential.
Such models are commonly employed in various
fields , including education , psychology , and
employment assessments :

ABILITY BASED MODEL OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
⮚ IN EDUCATION : ability-based models are instrumental in
understanding students' aptitude and performance in subjects
like mathematics , language , or science. These models help
educators tailor their teaching methods to address individual
strengths and weaknesses , promoting effective learning .
• IN PSYCHOLOGY : ability-based assessments are used to
gauge cognitive skills, such as memory, problem-solving, and
spatial reasoning. These evaluations can assist in diagnosing
cognitive impairments or developmental disorders and provide
valuable insights into an individual's cognitive profile.
• IN EMPLOYMENT : ability-based models are used for job
matching and hiring decisions. Employers assess candidates'
abilities to determine if they are a good fit for specific roles. This
approach ensures that individuals are placed in positions where
they can thrive based on their skills and competencies.

ABILITY BASED MODEL OF EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE BY DANIEL GOLEMAN :
The Ability based model of emotional intelligence , proposed by Daniel
Goleman , comprises four core abilities :
⮚ SELF AWARNESS : Recognizing and understanding one's own emotions,
including the ability to discern their impact on thoughts and behavior.
⮚ SELF MANAGEMENT : Effectively handling and regulating one's emotions
, demonstrating adaptability and resilience in various situations.
⮚ SOCIAL AWARENESS : Being attuned to the emotions of others ,
understanding their perspective , and recognizing social cues in different
contexts.
⮚ RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT : Using emotional information to
navigate social interactions skillfully , fostering positive relationships and
resolving conflicts effectively.

ABILITY BASED MODEL OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
Ability based models can refer to various frameworks or theories
across different domains. Here are few examples :
• GARDENER'S MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES : Howard
Gardner proposed multiple intelligences, including linguistic,
logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic,
interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic, and existential.
• STERNBERG'S TRIARCHIC THEORY :Robert Sternberg's
theory includes three types of intelligence: analytical
(problem-solving), creative (innovative thinking), and practical
(everyday problem-solving).
• PHYSICAL ABILITY MODEL :In the context of employment,
this model assesses an individual's physical abilities relevant to
a particular job, such as strength, endurance, or coordination.
• LEARNING STYLES :Some models categorize individuals
based on their preferred learning styles, like visual, auditory, or
kinesthetic learners.

ABILITY BASED MODEL OF
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
One of the key advantages of ability-based models is their focus
on objectivity. They provide a standardized way of evaluating
and comparing individuals' abilities, reducing the potential for
bias. However, these models do have limitations, as they may
not account for other factors like motivation, personality, or
work experience that can influence performance.
Overall, ability-based models offer a structured and fair
approach to understanding and leveraging individuals'
capabilities in various contexts. They play a crucial role in
education, psychology, and the workforce, contributing to better
outcomes for students, patients, and employees by aligning their
abilities with opportunities and responsibilities.
