ESP Completions
Description:
Hydraulic-set, Straight-pull release.
Multiple ports for cable, vent gas, and control
line by-pass.
Operation:
Set with tubing pressure.
Retrieved by shearing release screws with
straight pull of the tubing.
Features:
One-trip run and set.
Concentric element geometry.
Simple design concept.
9 5/8” ESP Packer ®
Setting Process
Tubing pressure enters the setting chamber
and acts upon the setting piston.
Start-to-set pins shear and pushes the
elements and slip carrier down.
Slips deploy outward onto the bottom wedge.
Top wedge travels under the slips.
Elements are compressed to the casing wall.
Setting force retained by the internal slips.
9 5/8” ESP Packer ®
Pressure Rating
Pressure differential from above creates forces acting
directly into the slips.
Pressure rating from below creates upward forces
acting upon the slips via the shear release screws.
Pressure rating from below is therefore controlled by
the shear release value.
The pressure differential from below acts upon an
area created by the casing ID less the tubing ID.
9 5/8” 40 ppf casing has an ID of 8.835”.
3 1/2” 9.3 ppf tubing has an ID of 2.992”.
Net area equals 54.28 sq.in.
Using a 1.30 safety factor, 60,000 lbs of shear release
will provide 850 psi differential rating from below.
9 5/8” ESP Packer
®
Retrieval Process
Straight pull of the tubing shears the release screws.
The mandrel moves up to relax the elements and
retract the slips.
Limits to straight pull should be accounted for when
determining the shear release value (pressure rating
from below).
Straight pull AND tubing pressure will act together to
shear the release screws (tubing pressure x 11.64
sq.in).
Once the packer releases, slack off to neutral for 15
minutes to allow the elements time to relax.
Pull out of the hole slowly.
7” DHR Packer ®
Description:
Hydraulic-set, Straight-pull release.
Multiple ports for cable and vent gas.
Operation:
Set with tubing pressure.
Retrieved by shearing release screws with
straight pull of the tubing.
Features:
One-trip run and set.
Concentric element geometry.
Simple design concept.

Retrieval Process
Straight pull of the tubing shears the release screws.
The mandrel moves up and retracts the slips and
relaxes the elements.
Limits to straight pull should be accounted for when
determining the shear release value (pressure rating
from below).
Tubing pressure will NOT assist with shearing the DHR
packer.
Once the packer releases, slack off to neutral for 15
minutes to allow the elements time to relax.
Pull out of the hole slowly.
Cable Pack-Off ®
Description:
Compression energized elastomer seals.
Dual seals with four elements.
Operation:
Seals on cable OD.
Seal is energized mechanically with torque.
Features:
Simple design.
Small size.
Redundant seals.
Designs available for round and flat cables.
Cable Pack-Off ®
Description:
Surface-controlled via control line.
Vents gas past packer into annulus.
Holds pressure from below only.
Operation:
Control line pressure opens the valve.
Spring closes valve upon loss of control line
pressure.
Rupture disk allows one time test of packer annulus
to 500 psi.
Vent Valve ®
Features:
Poppet closure.
Metal-to-metal closure seal.
Deep set capability.
Small diameter (1.89”)
Rupture disk for testing above.
