Crisis Intervention

A crisis is defined as a state of disequilibrium resulting from an event overwhelming an individual's coping abilities. Those at risk include those with employment or substance abuse issues, poor self-esteem, superficial relationships, and difficulty coping. There are three types of crises: maturational, situational, and social. Crises occur in phases and signs include anxiety, depression, anger, and neglecting responsibilities. Crisis intervention aims to provide a correct cognitive perception of the situation and assist the individual in managing intense overwhelming feelings associated with the crisis. Interventions include developing a plan of action, defining the event, helping the individual become aware of and attain mastery over their feelings.
