A network consists of two or more connected computers that share resources and exchange files and communication. Computers can be connected through cables, phone lines, radio waves, satellites, or light beams. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks, and wide area networks (WANs). LANs connect computers locally within a building while WANs connect LANs over long distances using phone lines or wireless links. Metropolitan area networks provide connectivity across a wider geographical range than LANs, such as within a city.

what is network ?

 A network consist of two or more computers that are

linked in order to share resources , exchange files ,or
allow elecyronic communications.

The computers on network may be linked through cables

through cables , telephone lines , radio waves , satellites ,
or infrared light beams
Different types of networks
• Depending upon the geographical area covered by a
network it is classified as;

 Local area network (lan)

 Metropolitan area network

 Wide area network

 Presonal area network

Uses of computer networks
• Communicating using email , video , instant
messaging ,etc.
• Sharing devices such as printers , scanners , etc.
• Sharing files.
• Sharing software and operating programs on
remote systems.
• Allowing network users to easily access and
maintain information.
Local area network

 LAN is the more frequently used network .a LAN is

computer network that connects computers together
through a common communication path , contained within
a limited area , that is , locally . A LAN encompasses two
or more computers connected over a server .the two
important technologies involved in this network are
ethernet and wi-fi
 Examples of lan are networking in a home school ,library , college ,
office ,etc
Wide area network

 Wan covers a large geographic area such as

country , continent or whole of the word
 A wan is two or more lans connected
together . The lans can be many miles apart.
 To cover great distances , wan may transmit
data over leased high –speed phone lines or
wireless links such as satellite
Metropolitan area network

 A metropolitan area network , or a man ,is a

medium –sized network that is larger than a can .
 While a man is a costly network , it provides
efficient connectivity between devices a cross a
wide geograghical range .
 For example ,a city government might operate
with a man if it has offices across the entire
metropolitan area .
