Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and
within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion,
releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.
BRIEF HISTORY AND NATURE OF
DANCE
Dance can be seen among all the people and civilizations of the world. Dances thrived at
different periods of history and mostly were a result of intercultural exchange and
contact
(Alejandro and Santos-Gana, 2002). The origins of dance are rooted in the prehistoric
past.
Various artistic, religious, and social forces started out the incorporation and
development of Dance.
ORIGINS OF ANTIQUITY- Early dances may have been religious in nature, and by
the time of ancient Greece, people were incorporating dance into celebrations of the
wine god Dionysus (and later the Roman god Bacchus) and into ritual dances during
the ancient Greek Olympic Games. In addition, individuals danced for pleasure,
seduction, and entertainment in the early days.
