• A ROUND RUBBER DIAPHRAGM WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER CREATES A SEAL WITH THE
PISTON AT THE TOP OF ITS STROKE.
• A BRASS SLEEVE AND PIN PROTRUDE THROUGH THE DIAPHRAGM, AND THE SLEEVE SEALS
CREATE A PLUG WITH AN O-RING, WHILE THE PIN PUSHES OPEN A BALL WHICH ACTS AS THE
INLET VALVE TO PRESSURIZE AN INTERMEDIATE CHAMBER.
• AS THE PISTON RETRACTS, THE BALL CLOSES THE INLET VALVE, THE OUTLET VALVE OF THE
INTERMEDIATE CHAMBER IS OPENED, FORCING THE DIAPHRAGM TO PUSH AGAINST THE
PISTON.
• THE SEAL BETWEEN THE PISTON AND DIAPHRAGM HOLDS UNTIL THE PISTON REACHES ITS
BOTTOM POSITION, WHERE THE PRESSURIZED AIR IS VENTED PAST THE PISTON AND OUT

DESIGNING AN AIR PRESSURE ENGINEINVOLVES SEVERAL CALCULATIONS TODETERMINE THE NECESSARY PARAMETERSAND PERFORMANCE
CHARACTERISTICS.HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY CALCULATIONSINVOLVED THE DESIGN PROCESS:
1. AIR PRESSURE CALCULATION: DETERMINE THE DESIRED AIRPRESSURE FOR THE ENGINE, TYPICALLYMEASURED IN POUNDS PER
SQUAREINCH (PSI) OR PASCALS (PA). CONSIDER FACTORS SUCH AS THEDESIRED POWER OUTPUT ANDEFFICIENCY TO DETERMINE
ANAPPROPRIATE AIR PRESSURE.
2. VOLUME CALCULATION: CALCULATE THE REQUIRED VOLUME OFCOMPRESSED AIR FOR THE ENGINEBASED ON THE DESIRED
POWEROUTPUT AND THE EXPANSION RATIO. THE EXPANSION RATIO IS THE RATIO OFTHE VOLUME OF THE COMPRESSED AIR TO THE
VOLUME OF THE EXPANDED AIR.
3. CYLINDER SIZE CALCULATION: DETERMINE THE REQUIRED CYLINDER SIZE BASED ON THE DESIRED VOLUME OF COMPRESSED AIR AND THE
STROKELENGTH. THE STROKE LENGTH IS THE DISTANCE THE PISTON TRAVELS WITHIN THE CYLINDER DURING THE ENGINE'S OPERATION.
4. PISTON AREA CALCULATION: CALCULATE THE REQUIRED PISTON AREA TO GENERATE THE DESIRED POWER OUTPUT AND AIR PRESSURE.
THE PISTON AREA IS DETERMINED BYDIVIDING THE FORCE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE THE DESIRED POWER BY THEAIR PRESSURE.
5. VALVE TIMING CALCULATION: DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE VALVETIMING FOR THE INTAKE AND EXHAUSTVALVES TO ENSURE EFFICIENT
AIRINTAKE AND EXHAUST PROCESSES.CONSIDER FACTORS SUCH AS THEENGINE SPEED, DESIRED POWER OUTPUT, AND VALVE OVERLAP.
6. CRANKSHAFT TORQUE CALCULATION: CALCULATE THE TORQUE REQUIRED ATTHE CRANKSHAFT TO GENERATE THEDESIRED POWER
OUTPUT. TORQUE IS DETERMINED BY MULTIPLYING THE PISTON FORCE BY THECRANK RADIUS.
7. EFFICIENCY CALCULATION: THE THERMAL EFFICIENCY OFTHE AIR PRESSURE ENGINE, WHICHREPRESENTS RATIO OF THE USEFULWORK
OUTPUT TO THE ENERGY INPUT.CONSIDER FACTORS SUCH AS HEATLOSSES, PRESSURE LOSSES, AND MECHANICAL LOSSES IN THE ENGINE.
8. COOLING REQUIREMENTS:ESTIMATE THE COOLINGREQUIREMENTS FOR THE ENGINE TO PREVENT OVERHEATING
DURINGOPERATION.CONSIDER FACTORS SUCH AS HEATGENERATED BY COMPRESSION ANDCOMBUSTION PROCESSES AND THE COOLING
CAPACITY OF THE ENGINE'SCOOLING SYSTEM.
9. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: CONDUCT STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS TO ENSURE THE ENGINE COMPONENTS CAN WITHSTAND THE FORCES
ANDPRESSURES GENERATED DURING OPERATION. CONSIDER FACTORS SUCH AS MATERIAL STRENGTH, STRESS ANALYSIS, ANDSAFETY

P2) / (T * 14.7)] * 1.25. To keep things simple,
let's imagine a 5-cubic-foot compressed air
system. Starting at 100 PSIG, it takes the system
60 minutes to reach the end pressure of 50 PSIG.
SOLUTION
INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MAKE AN AIR-TIGHT
PISTON, WE ADDED A RUBBER MEMBRANE AND
A CLEVER VALVE SYSTEM TO CREATE A
DIAPHRAGM AIR ENGINE.
