Phonetics
Phonetics, the study of speech sounds and their physiological production and acoustic
qualities. It deals with the configurations of the vocal tract used to produce speech
sounds (articulatory phonetics), the acoustic properties of speech sounds (acoustic
phonetics), and the manner of combining sounds so as to make syllables, words, and
sentences (linguistic phonetics).
Phonetics: Vowels, IPA
Vowel
A speech sound which is produced by comparatively open configuration of the vocal tract,
with vibration of the vocal cords but without audible friction, and which is a unit of the
sound system of a language that forms the nucleus of a syllable, intonation stress.
