What is a GPS: 1

GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a satellite-based

navigation system that enables precise location and
time information anywhere on Earth. Consisting of a
constellation of orbiting satellites, ground control
stations, and GPS receivers, the system allows users to
determine their accurate three-dimensional position,
velocity, and time. GPS has diverse applications, from
navigation in vehicles and smartphones to scientific
research, military operations, and emergency services.
Its widespread use has significantly impacted various
industries, enhancing efficiency, safety, and
Introduction: 2

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based

navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed
into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was
originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980's,
the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS
works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24
hours a day, 365 days a year. The 24 satellites that make up the
GPS space segment are orbiting the earth about 12,000 miles
above us. These satellites are travelling at speeds of roughly
7,000 miles an hour. GPS satellites are powered by solar
energy. They have backup batteries onboard to keep them
running in the event of a solar eclipse, when there's no solar
power. Small rocket boosters on each satellite keep them flying
in the correct path. Each satellite weighs about 2,000 pounds
and is built to last about ten years
Importance of GPS: 3

ONE - A battery operated, hand-held GPS is ideal for small

boats, because it doesn’t need to be mounted and won’t take
up valuable console space.
TWO-Mountable or portable GPS receivers have larger display
screens, bigger buttons and more features than hand-held
units. Most GPS in this category operate on batteries or
external 12-volt power. They come with brackets to hold the
GPS in place while you’re underway and can be removed for
safekeeping when you’re done cruising
THREE - Fixed-mount GPS receivers offer the largest displays
and the most features. They’re meant to be installed
permanently
FOUR -A stand-alone GPS is often referred to as a chart plotter.
Many fixed-mount GPS units combine satellite navigation with
fish finding functions.
Advantages of GPS: 4
:- GPS is extremely easy to navigate because it tells you to
direction for every turns you’re taking otherwise you need to
fancy reach to your destination
:-GPS works altogether weather so you would like to not worry
of climate as in other navigating devices
:-GPS costs you very low as compared other navigation systems
-Most attraction of this technique is its100% coverage on earth:
:-It also helps you to look nearby restaurants, hotels and gas
stations and is extremely useful for a replacement place
:-Due to its low cost, it’s very easy to integrate into other
technologies like telephone
:-System is updated regularly by United States government and
hence is extremely advance
:-This is the simplest navigating system in water as in larger
water bodies we are often misled thanks to lack of proper
directions
:-GPS signal is out there worldwide. Therefore, users won’t be
bereft of it anywhere
:-GPS are often used anywhere within world, it’s powered by
world satellites, so it are often accessed anywhere, a solid
tracking system and a GPS receiver are all you would like

Limitations of GPS:
1:-Satellite Geometry: The arrangement of satellites in the sky
affects the accuracy of location data. Poor satellite geometry
can lead to reduced accuracy, especially in urban canyons or
mountainous areas.
2:-Atmospheric Conditions: Atmospheric interference, such as
ionospheric and tropospheric delays, can impact signal
accuracy, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
3:-Power Consumption: Continuous use of GPS on mobile
devices consumes significant battery power, affecting the
device's overall battery life.
4:-Availability of Satellites: In some remote or polar regions,
the availability of a sufficient number of GPS satellites may be
limited, affecting the accuracy of positioning.
5:-Security Concerns: GPS signals can be susceptible to
intentional interference or jamming, posing security risks in
military and critical infrastructure applications.
6:-nitial Time to Fix: GPS receivers may take some time to
acquire signals and calculate an accurate position, leading to a
delay in providing location information, especially in cold starts.
Future Development in GPS: 6

The GPS is a space-based global navigation satellite system

(GNSS) that provides reliable positioning, navigation, and
timing services to civilian and military users on a continuous
worldwide basis. GPS is a U.S.-owned utility, developed by the
U.S. Air Force starting with the program in 1978.
During the 1990s, a lot of civilian and commercial GPS
applications appeared, and also other GNSS systems
competitive with GPS were envisaged. Taking this into account,
the policy of the United States policy is to maintain U.S.
leadership in the service, provision, and use of satellite
navigation systems. The U.S. government has additional policy
goals to meet growing demands by improving the performance
of GPS services, and to remain competitive with international
satellite navigation systems
Conclusion: 7

In conclusion, the Global Positioning System (GPS) stands as a

transformative technology with far-reaching implications. Its
accuracy and reliability have revolutionized navigation,
emergency services, agriculture, and various other industries.
The pervasive influence of GPS extends from optimizing
transportation to enhancing military operations, demonstrating
its indispensable role in our interconnected and technologically
advanced world. As GPS continues to evolve, its impact on daily
life, scientific research, and societal functions is likely to
deepen, reaffirming its status as a cornerstone technology of
the modern era.
