Data Communication System
Data Communication System
Parallel Transmission
4/28/12
In this transmission of data, all the bits of a byte are tansmitted simultaneously on seperate wires It requires multiple circuits for interconnecting the two devices
Serial Transmission
4/28/12
In this, the bits of a byte are serially transmitted one after the other For this only one wire is needed between transmitter & receiver
4/28/12
Synchronous serial transmission: It is carried out under the control of a common master clock i.e. same clock is given to transmitter & receiver Bytes are transmitted as a block in a continuous stream of bits Flag sync bit is present between data blocks
4/28/12
2. .
Asynchronous serial transmission: The transmitter & receiver operate at different clock frequencies Only one byte is sent at a time Start & stop bits are used along with each data byte to enable proper reception at the receiver end

Types Of Communication
Based on whether the system communicates in only one direction or both, the communication systems are classified as: Simplex System Half Duplex System
1.
1.
4/28/12 1.
Simplex System
In these systems the information is communicated only in one direction For example, the radio & TV broadcasting systems can only transmit. They cannot receive
2.
4/28/12
3.
4/28/12
These are truly bidirectional systems as they allow the communication to take place in both the directions simultaneously These systems can transmit as well as receive simultaneously, for example the cellular & telephone systems
