Lesson 2 - 13

This document discusses arithmetic sequences. It defines arithmetic sequences as sequences where the difference between consecutive terms is the same. It provides examples of arithmetic sequences and their common differences. It then introduces the general term formula to write any term in an arithmetic sequence given the first term, common difference, and term number. Several examples are worked through to demonstrate finding common differences and specific terms using the general term formula. Exercises are provided to have students practice identifying arithmetic sequences and finding terms.

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES

 Let’s look to the sequence 6, 10, 14, 18, ………

 Obviously the difference between each term is equal to 4 and the sequence can be written as where
 For the sequence 23, 21, 19, the formula will be where
 In these examples, the difference between consecutive terms in each sequence is the same. We call sequences with
this special property arithmetic sequence.
DEFINITION

 If a sequence has the same difference between its consecutive terms, then it is called an arithmetic sequence.
 In other words is arithmetic if such then . We call the common difference of the arithmetic sequence.
 If is positive, we say the arithmetic sequence is increasing. If is negative, we say the arithmetic sequence is
decreasing.
 EXAMPLE:
 1.) State wheter the following sequences are arithmrtic or not. If a sequence is arithmetic, find the common
difference.
 A) 7, 10, 13, 16,..  arithmetic
 B)  arithmetic
 C)  not arithmetic..
GENERAL TERM

 If is arithmetic, then we only know that

 Let us write few terms:

 Since arithmetic sequences have many applications,

it is much better to express the general term directly,
instead of recursively. The formula is divided as
follows:

 …..
 this is general term of an arithmetic sequence.
GENERAL TERM FORMULA

The general term of an arithmetic sequence ( with common difference is :

EXAMPLE:

 1.) are the first three terms of an arithmetic sequence. Find the twentieth term.
 Solution: We know that . Using the general term formula,

 2.) is arithmetic sequence with Find the common difference and

 Solution: Using the general term formula,

 So we have
EXERCISES:

 3.) is an arithmetic sequence with Is 59 a term of this sequence?

 4.) Find the 29’th term in the given arithmetic sequence if
NUMBERS OF TERMS OF A FINITE ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

The number of terms in a finite arithmetic sequence is Where is the first term, is last term, and is common
difference.

ADVANCED GENERAL TERM FORMULA

The general term of an arithmetic sequence with common difference is : where is

any term of that sequence.
EXAMPLE:

 1.) is an arithmetic sequence with and Find the common difference.

 Solution: Using the advanced general term formula,
EXAMPLE:

 1.) are three consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence. Find x?

 Solution: If we say then using the middle term formula,
 and Therefore, is 12 if the sequence is arithmetic.
