ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES
If a sequence has the same difference between its consecutive terms, then it is called an arithmetic sequence.
In other words is arithmetic if such then . We call the common difference of the arithmetic sequence.
If is positive, we say the arithmetic sequence is increasing. If is negative, we say the arithmetic sequence is
decreasing.
EXAMPLE:
1.) State wheter the following sequences are arithmrtic or not. If a sequence is arithmetic, find the common
difference.
A) 7, 10, 13, 16,.. arithmetic
B) arithmetic
C) not arithmetic..
GENERAL TERM
…..
this is general term of an arithmetic sequence.
GENERAL TERM FORMULA
1.) are the first three terms of an arithmetic sequence. Find the twentieth term.
Solution: We know that . Using the general term formula,
So we have
EXERCISES:
The number of terms in a finite arithmetic sequence is Where is the first term, is last term, and is common
difference.
