Screw Thread Measurement PART-1

There are 5 major types of errors that can occur in screw threads: 1) Diameter errors, such as the major diameter, minor diameter, and effective diameter being incorrect sizes 2) Flank angle errors where the angle of the thread is incorrect 3) Pitch errors where the spacing of the threads is uneven or the wrong size These errors can lead to interference during assembly or a loss of contact between threads. They must be checked for during production and measured using tools like thread comparators.

• Errors in screw thread:

• In screw threads , five important elements require

consideration. An error in any of these will lead to
rejection of threads.
• While producing the threads , all the five elements
are to be checked.
• The following are the five major thread errors:
• a) Major dia error
• b) minor dia error.
• c) Effective dia error.
• d) Flank angle error.
• e) pitch error.
• a) Major dia error: This error leads to
reduction in the flank contact and interference with
the matching threads.
• b) minor dia error.: This error leads leads to
interference and reduction in flank contact.
• c) Effective dia error: when the effective
diameter is small, the threads will be thin on the
external screw and thick on the internal screw.
• d) Flank angle error: if there is an error in
angle of the thread, it results in interference between
the bolt and nut. To get the assembly, the effective dia
of nut has to be increased.
• e) pitch error: An error in pitch leads to either
too high or too little engagement of the thread over its
total length.
• The important pitch errors are:
• a) progressive error: here pitch of the thread is
uniform. But pitch is longer or shorter than its
nominal value.
• this error causes due to
-– incorrect work velocity ratio.
-- incorrect gear train and lead screw.
-- variation in length due to hardening.
• b) periodic error: this is an error that repeats itself
at regular intervals along the threads.
• This error causes due to
-- lead screw error
-- teeth error in gears.
-- non uniform tool work velocity ratio.
-- eccentric mounting of gears.
• C) Drunken error: drunken thread is defined as the
thread which has irregular pitch. The movement of
helix in one complete revolution of thread is erratic
or irregular.
• these errors are repeated once per turn of the
thread.
• if the thread is not cut to the true helix, the drunken
thread error will form.
• d) Irregular errors:
• This error varies in irregular manner along the
length of the thread.
• These errors causes due to
--machine fault -- material with non uniformity.
-- incorrect cutting action.
-- disturbances during machining.
• Measurement of major diameter of internal
threads:
• For measuring the major diameter of internal
threads a threaded comparator fitted with a ball-
ended stylus is used.
• Operation: step1: instrument is being set for a
cylindrical reference and reading is taken as R1.
• Step2: the floating head is adjusted such that it
engages the tips of the styli at the root of spring
under pressure. The new reading is taken as R2.
• Now major diameter = D= S ± (R1-R2).
