What is BIM?
Brief History of
BIM
• As early as the 1960s
• BIM has long existed as a concept, but had to wait for
technology to catch up
• 1975 - “Building Description System” - Charles Eastman
“The Use of Computers Instead of Drawings In Building
Design,”
• 1980s - “Building Product Models” in the USA, and
“Product Information Models” in Europe.
• Merged to become “Building Information Model” -
Van Nederveen and Tolman (1992), from TU Delft in
the Netherlands.

Common Misconception of
BIM!
Can’t have BIM without a model, but just because
you are modelling doesn’t mean you are BIM-ing

Modeling
Building Information Modelling is defined as the creation and use of
geometrically coordinated 3D ‘objects’, enhanced by
Associated Computable Data, to describe a building project.in

What is LOD?
LOD Ç LODI Ç
PETMALU
What is LOD?
• ‘LOD’ is concept intended to obtain agreement
about
• object content at different stages.
What is ‘Object
▪ Material, Content’?
Size, Detail, Id & Text
data
• ‘‘Level of Detail’ or ‘Level of
Development’?
▪ Detail = Number of Edges
▪ Development = Accuracy and Progress
